Having had my Kindle for less than a week, I haven’t solved the problem.
I have yet to learn how to make books on the kindle available to the library to read.
They are on the kindle when viewed in the computer directory but can’t be found on the kindle
I recommend a smaller tablet for improved portability; I have an iPad Mini. This assumes a regular computer back home for serious work.
For carry, I have a leather folio case. It make the device look like a day planner type thing. Something like this:

There’s nothing metrosexual about carrying a book, and carrying a tablet is no different. You can even get tablet covers that make them look like hardback books.
I have a black, masculine messenger bag.
I hope that God blesses you, your husband, and his father.
Eph 6:1b - (this is the first commandment with a promise)
I have been through those long hours of rehabilitation. The iPad will help pass the time.
Ask your husband to check out the free offerings for the Olive Tree app. I believe this will help pass the time in a very beneficial way.
And more manly cases from Pelican.
Don't know the size of case you need but Magpul has one for teh iPad Mini.
And check Cabela's.
Or electronics everything from B&H Photo Video.
