There’s a good picture of Flea on stage during the halftime show, where it is obvious there in nothing plugged into his bass output jack. Air bass indeed, just with a very nice prop.

I'd seen what looks like a close-up screen shot of the .gif you posted (2nd one down in the link) where it clearly shows Flea not being plugged in.

I was suspicious even during the 1st Bruno Mars song since the bassist's left hand was not doing anything even remotely close to playing the bass line in the song. It was a pretty sweet gold sparkle Fender Precision bass, though!
