Defence is an afterthought for Elway.

I disagree. Their defensive coordinator is a former head coach who stood in as interim HC when Fox had heart issues. Their first pick and third picks in the 2013 draft were at DT and CB. They were also very active in free agency in 2013 picking up Knighton, Rodgers-Cromartie, and Phillips to name a few.

Defense hasn't been an afterthought. Sure it's taken a back seat to Manning and probably the greatest Offensive regular season in history.

Another thing about the Broncos' defense: When you have an offensive powerhouse like you do, you have teams playing catch up and several games with a quarter's worth of garbage time. If you rate a defense specifically on statistics, a #1 offense is very frequently going to have a middle-of-the-pack or less defense.

They just got plain thumped by Seattle. That's all. It has nothing to do with poor management, bad priorities, lack of competitive spirit, hurt feelings, etc. Seattle just smoked 'em....and I was happy they did.
