When it comes to Super Bowls and getting blown out, no one goes down in flames quite like the Denver Broncos. Denver's loss to Seattle on Sunday was team's fifth Super Bowl loss, an NFL record.
The Broncos had been tied with the Patriots (3-4), Vikings (0-4) and Bills (0-4) for most Super Bowl losses.
Having the most Super Bowl losses is bad enough, but it gets worse: thanks to the 43-8 final score, the Broncos have now been on the losing end of three of the five biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history.
Here are the five biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history:
1. Super Bowl XXIV: San Francisco 55-10 over Denver
2. Super Bowl XX: Chicago 46-10 over New England
T-3. Super Bowl XLIV: Seattle 43-8 over Denver
T-3. Super Bowl XXVII: Dallas 52-17 over Buffalo
5. Super Bowl XXII: Washington 42-10 over Denver
Here's a brief look at the Broncos' four Super Bowl losses. You can read the game story from the Broncos fifth Super Bowl loss by clicking here.
Super Bowl XII: Dallas 27, Denver 10 -- This is the only Super Bowl in NFL history that had a split MVP and one of only seven times in 48 years that a defensive player won the MVP award. Cowboys defensive tackle Randy White shared the award with teammate Harvey Martin. Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith became the eighth defensive player to win the Super Bowl MVP when he won the award Sunday.
Super Bowl XXI: NY Giants 39, Denver 20 -- The Broncos were beat down by Phil Simms. Simms completed a Super Bowl record 88 percent of his passes (22 of 25) for 268 yards and three touchdowns as New York won its first Super Bowl title in franchise history. Simms also became the first Super Bowl MVP to utter the most famous postgame words that have ever been uttered, "I'm going to Disney World."
Super Bowl XXII: Washington 42, Denver 10 -- Of the Broncos' first four Super Bowl losses, this one might have been the most painful. For one quarter against Washington, the Broncos looked like they were going to dominate the game. Denver jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but then the wheels fell off the wagon and the wagon caught on fire. Redskins quarterback Doug Williams threw four touchdown passes in the second quarter and Washington scored 35 total points as the Redskins turned the game into a rout. Williams threw for 340 yards and four touchdowns and took home the Super Bowl MVP award.
Super Bowl XXIV: San Francisco 55, Denver 10 -- The 49ers' 55-10 win is still the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history and San Francisco's 55 points are the most ever scored in a Super Bowl. This game was never close as the 49ers jumped out to a 41-3 lead.
It's also worth noting that although the Broncos do lose often in the Super Bowl, they also have won before. With John Elway under center, the Broncos won back-to-back titles in Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII.
We are #1...Woohoo!!!
Seahawks
yech
can’t stand those liberal computer nerds
If you are going to be famous for losing, I guess losing Super Bowls is the best place to earn that title.
Hey, we are also conservative blue collar types living in a blue state...
That was the worst Super-Bowl I have ever seen. It was like watching the Seahawks play a division III college team.
I thought they would win by a lot, if not quite that much. The NFC championship was the real Super Bowl.
But what about us conservatives living in CO? It’s not fair! They should have allowed a do over of the first play.
yeah, uh huh
well you better move out
your stupid ugly football team is hated
Yes I've heard that defense usually wins. And this was certainly the case today.
But the Broncos looked terrible.
Good strategy on the Seahawks part. They shut down the incredible Broncos offense.
Manning does not usually get his butt handed to him, though.
I was frankly stunned at how poorly he played.
Could this be the beginning of another era of NFC dominance?
The Hawks barely beat some very good teams, and even lost to the Cardinals.
And by the skin of their teeth beat the 49'ers.
Having said that, I'd wager that the 49'ers and the Cardinals would have whooped the Broncos today as well.
Besides the Ravens I can't think of another AFC team that could compete vs. a good NFC team.
Poor Peyton Manning
Gads I loathe those sickening Seahawks
bunch of blue idiots
Manning the greatest QB evah, bwahahahaha.
Just damn FRiend, sorry you hate us so much :-(
I keep wanting to say "poor Peyton", too. Then I think of how much he makes...lol. Still, I feel sorry for him. I know not the end of the world. Maybe next year. :)
yeah I am twelve and how old is your ugly cornerback
I’ve seen Monkey-Shit fights at the zoo that were more organized than the Bronco’s Offense.
I was expecting something a little more out of the Bronc’s, so I stopped watching after the half-time show.
It was the Tebow curse.
