Thanks. The whole “inequality” meme is based upon casuistry and sophistry. (Heh, heh.) Aesop had it figured out, 6 centuries B.C. when he wrote about the hard-working ant and the lazy, fun-loving grasshopper. Should they have an “equal” amount of food available when winter comes?

I’ve read the article and the comments (through 27) and just can’t come up with any reason why a drug oeverdose death is a bad thing.
These people have parents and family. We shouldn't be cheering their deaths. Yes, there are probably some who are of little use to anyone, but others are just as human as you or I.
One of the local crusaders against drugs runs his campaign under the name of his son, who died from an overdose. Yes, people make bad choices. For some people the addiction is overpowering and takes all.
There is no reason to be callous. I would love to have these loudmouth sin-free FReepers tell a father that they can't find any reason why his son't death is a bad thing.

Why do they call it a “drug overdose”....these deaths occur with the same dose they took the last time. It’s a misnomer. Illegal drugs kill, it’s just that simple.
We had a local death by illegal drugs. Very sad to see a 20 year old dead. Family was devastated. CPR on a boy that young is very sad.

Sometimes yes, sometime no.
In this case, the drug being sold contains fentanyl, which is much stronger. So someone may take the same “dose” as the last time, but he is not aware that he is dealing with a much stronger drug.
Without any standards, the consumer is at risk. When I buy whiskey from the store, I know it is the same potency that it was the last time. It’s clearly labeled.
I would imagine some of the overdoses are from people using the same drug at higher and higher doses. And some are from using the same dose, but with an unknown-to-them stronger “batch.”

What is with the casuistric officiating in the NHL? Since when is it goalie interference when your own guy throws an opponent into your goalie and refs then take a goal off the scoreboard?
You make no sense, illegal means just that...no standards and no quality control. Thus illegal describes it just fine.

Right. But I was disputing your point that they are always taking the same “dose.” A person may start with 5 cc, but move up to 10 or 15 as they get more tolerance.
Then along comes a more potent batch and their 15 is like 30 of the last batch.
The point is that it is accidental.
No one knows what’s in it or how much, thus the illegal term is valid.
I wouldn’t say accidental, either. Unintentional might be a better word choice. Any fool has to know that taking illegal drugs can kill you with the first or 20th dose.
Yes. Does that mean that we should have no compassion for the person who falls into addiction? Especially when a teen? Or for their families?
Cause that is the attitude of smug superiority that I was speaking out against.
Any senseless death is a sad thing. But when someone engages in risky behavior that leads to that death, as compared to a totally unexpected death, it is hard to jin up the same amount of sympathy. My heart breaks for people whose kids get involved with drugs. Or when their children commit suicide.
I just spent some time with a father after a CPR on his son. Drug paraphernalia was present and he had a history of possession of illegal drugs. The term “drug overdose” is not accurate and family thinks it’s a suicide when you use it. I explained that any dose can kill at any time and it’s a crap shoot if it will take your life or not to use illegal drugs. Father was beating himself up because he didn’t see the “suicide” coming. I very much doubt it was a suicide, just accidental death using recreational drugs.
