I trust the advice of freepers more than any other source. Do any of you own the Nexus 7? What things should I do and not do? Lock? Unlock? Root? Don't Root? I would enjoy reading your tips and suggestions.

I have found my Nexus 6 units to be quite serviceable, if somewhat self-willed.

I especially like Pris, the Pleasure Model -

I have one. I really like mine. The only thing I don’t like is that the camera is set in such a way that you can’t turn the device around to take the picture. You have to face it towards yourself. I’ve had it since May. I don’t lock mine, mostly because I’m afraid that I won’t be able to unlock it. I don’t know anything about Root.

Get a Poetic Slimline case for $15. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. Sleek, perfect fit, turns the tablet on or off when opening/closing it. Love my Nexus 7. Hardly use my PC anymore.

Get Chromecast, plug it into your HDMI slot on your TV and your Nexus 7 plays on your TV.

Next, if you did not get the warranty, don’t drop it on a tile floor.

A great app is Tunein. With that you can pick up FOXNews (audio of the TV programming only) and every radio station in the world.

Start harvesting WIFI hotspots. Your email will download as you drive past the hotspots.

Oh, and it is way better than an Apple Mini so congrats.

I got the well-reviewed half-price version, the Hisense Sero 7 Pro. It has been very handy, surprisingly. It has a camera on the back and front. I got the cover with a large accessory kit that included the HDMI plug, a radio one, etc. I also got the plastic stuff to protect the screen, Illumni-Shield, I think. A man did a you-tube showing the easiest way to put it on using masking tape. I followed his method. Perfect.

Personally, the 5x7 size being like carrying around a paperback, is perfect for me.

I found a cool-to-me new app for cataloging all my stored stuff. It even scans barcodes, though bulk items were not reconized,. No barcodes on my home-canned goods, of course. I am now looking at gardening apps. Post-its are not getting it during the growing season. There seems to be apps for every interest on Google Play. Amazon carries them too. I have to admit reading on the tablet is nicer than my Kindle.

I have the first generation Nexus 7 and use it everyday. As others has mentioned Chromecast is very handy to have. I haven’t rooted it because I’m afraid I would brick it.

I have an iPod Touch, a Nexus 7, and a Windows laptop.

One of the apps I highly recommend is Pocket.

It allows you to save articles from your web browser to read later. You create an account at the Pocket website. That allows Pocket to push the saved articles to any device you have running a Pocket app (i.e., my iPod Touch and my Nexus) and a Pocket extension (Chrome and Firefox on my PC). So I can Pocket an article on my Nexus and read it later on my iPod Touch, for example.

I can read the articles when I’m offline (just remember to start the app when you are online so that the articles can be downloaded). Even better, there are some articles that you just want to keep - financial advice, a restaurant’s menu, a news article about a family member, a listing of best websites for something you’re interested in, instructions for how to do something, etc. Once you’ve saved that article, you have it forever and you don’t have to go searching the internet for it again. And, usually, it’s formatted better, without all the ads, for reading.
