Word For The Day, Tuesday January 21, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
symposium [sim-poh-zee-uhm]
-n
1. a meeting or conference for the discussion of some subject, especially a meeting at which several speakers talk on or discuss a topic before an audience.
2. a collection of opinions expressed or articles contributed by several persons on a given subject or topic.
3. an account of a discussion meeting or of the conversation at it.
4. (in ancient Greece and Rome) a convivial meeting, usually following a dinner, for drinking and intellectual conversation.
5. ( initial capital letter, italics ) a philosophical dialogue (4th century b.c.) by Plato, dealing with ideal love and the vision of absolute beauty.
[158090; < Latin < Greek sympósion drinking party, equivalent to sym- sym- + po- (variant stem of pī́nein to drink) + -sion noun suffix ]
de hecho

in fact, actually
De hecho, ella era la estudiante mas joven de todas.
In fact, she was the youngest student of all.
De hecho, knowing that “symposium” is Greek for “drinking together” explains a whole lot.
Morning Dave
Morning yourself. And a fine day it is, with a sloppy commute and an expected 2-3 inches of snow during the day.
Ha! Not even a flake in the air here yet and everything is shut.
Early closure, not a flake yet. Rme
I have a couple people supposed to be coming in for me to do some training. A Brit and a Malasyian. The latter may have never seen snow before.
What if they held a symposium
On Obama, by all those opposing him?
The Grand Canyon, I know
Couldn’t handle the flow
Of all of us bent on exposing him
Someone’s had his coffee.
The best faux symposium ever was the boat of global warmists who got stuck in the ice.
You can take them out to make snow angels!!
We have a few flurries blowing around but nothing big coming and they said the cold front will come roaring in over the next couple of hours so I’m off to the park! The spouse is refusing to go with me. Chiding didn’t convince him.
Are you even supposed to get snow?
Tomorrow is supposed to be near zero in the morning, so I imagine they might cancel or delay tomorrow.
Random flakes now.
Coming down hard now. Frickin small flakes too. Dammit.
Been snowing here in the frozen tundra daily.
Not just snow flakes either......our dang governor, the giant snowflake in Albany, says conservatives are not even wanted here.
It’s 40 degrees here with a high of 70 expected. The real story, however, is the pervasive drought. I’ve never seen my home town so dry. The reservoirs are dry, the rivers are dry, the crops are dry. There are signs in my hotel room asking us to help the water problem by reusing our towels. Water is not offered in restaurants. There was a rally on the governor’s steps on Friday with people demanding water.
Government regs require that what water there is flows out to the ocean, unobsructed, and cannot be diverted for crop use. Supposedly this helps the fish, but both sides in the debate admit that the water flow is too low to be of any help to the fish.
The air is laden with a fine dust/haze that makes it difficult to read street signs. Signs that are green with white writing are much easier to read than those that are white with blue writing (most of them).
Yet, professional gardners are planting pansies and purple kale everywhere. Most people use a form of drip watering to keep the flowers alive.
I read on-line that it is -4 degrees at my present home in Wisconsin with snow expected tomorrow (my flying day). I can hardly wait to get home.
