Quality is something we all want when it comes to cars, especially older used ones. But how do we get it?
I have been studying this question in one form or another for nearly 14 years now. I began my automotive career as a car dealer, buying and selling hundreds of vehicles a year. As time went on, I became an auto auctioneer, a remarketing manager and a part-owner of a wholesale auto auction.

I have only driven them as rentals so i bow to your experience! LOL.

98 Camaro Z28. 215,000 miles, same thing. Nuisance issues.
Top Gear likes Toyota’s

None of the vehicles listed would ever be on my “A” list, new or used. I somehow think the list is unimportant to the overwhelming majority of car buyers, because the models are NOT very popular with the majority of car buyers in the first place.
Now then, if the author had taken a list of 25 “top sellers” and rated them for how they rank as used cars, THAT would be some seriuously helpful info.
Id rather put 15k into this car and make it “new” rather than spend 25K on a new car.
‘98 F-Bird here and that is exactly my plan. No more new cars. Also gonna supe up the v6 to 250 hp or so.
I think Hyundai makes good cars. I drive a 2004 Hyundai Sonata, only 31K miles, almost like new. I inherited form Mom who passed away in November. Got rid of my 1999 Blazer, it was a good car too but it needs ball-joints and an idler arm among other things and with me being financially strapped along with going through Mom’s death and having to give up the house and move on, the Hyundai is a better choice. The Blazers do tend to eat up ball-joints and front end parts.
I don't know sales specifically, but his graphic show the percentage of vehicles traded in with over 180K miles.
American brands: GMC-Ford-Chevrolet. Chrysler, Saturn are trash.
Foreign: Anything Japanese. European is trash.
Dozens of sites rank best used cars, with few surprises.
Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Subaru, GM pickups & SUVs, even late model Volvo S60s. Fit, Fusion, Corvette, Mustang; something for everyone.
My wife works for a big, very upscale dealer. She says spending money with a mechanic previously trusted for a thorough inspection NO MATTER WHO IS SELLING IT is the best money you’ll ever spend.
For my money, the entry level luxury cars like Lexus ES or Infinti G or Acura TL really are the best deals.
Upthread has been mentioned that there are car guys who can rebuild cheap Chryslers into very reliable basic transportation, as long as they’re sufficiently ‘rebuilt’.
I have an 05 Mazda MPV with almost 120k miles on it. It does have a slight oil leak from the pan ... but not bad enough to tackle a replacement yet. Other that that, it’s just as good as any other car I’ve ever put those kinds if miles on.
LOL
true dat...
210,000 on my 4x4 Mitsubishi mighty max and the head cracked because it overheated when a hose blew. I drove it another 10,000 with no coolant until I finally pulled the head off and welded the crack. It was up to 280,000 when I gave it away to a neighborhood acquaintance who was down on his luck and needed a vehicle. He still drives it around today. I miss that truck.
Ditto about checking out central and south America to see what cars last. Without fail the most beat up reliable mule is the great old Toyota pickup. That’s where my fantasy car resides as well. The diesel Toyota Hi-Lux 4 door pickup.
A lot of foreign nameplates on that list. Tcicero2khanks cicero2k.
I ain’t that great.
I had a pinto ....
LOL
Hey, at least it wasn't a Gremlin!!
Besides, I always thought Pintos were kinda cute. But I'm a gal. There's no reasoning with us!
1996 Ford Taurus I bought was in the shop constantly for 2 years before I dumped it. Have had Honda Civics ever since with little or no problems.
What would have been kewel is if my Mom gave me her Capri.
They bought it from Germany and it was awesome down highway 9 and 17.
And vroom down the 280.
Those are our local highways.
My racetracks.
I love turns and best of all banked turns.
My first car was a used purple Gremlin. What a lemon!
Hmmm...I have a choice between a Lincoln LS and a Yugo. I guess I will buy the Yugo. The list is BS!
