There are troubles. The more people on a list, the more work FR's server has to perform to get everyone notified. We went through a time a while ago, where longer lists were crashing the process, and we had to split them up.
Responsibly maintaining one's list(s) is a small part we can do to help FR function efficiently and successfully.
I routinely prune 3-4 names (sometimes more) from my list every quarter. I just check to see who has not posted in the last year, and they're gone.

Seems to me that’s a sysadmin job. We can’t post to a FReeper that’s not here. If the sysadmin really cared about defunct FReepers cluttering up the system, they would be deleting them and then the posting software would complain when we posted using our list.
