Not a fan of terriers or small dogs in general. I’ve known some good Corgis though. One small dog that I think is great for older folks is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Tremendous disposition. Not yappy at all.

Go to the SPCA and rescue a mutt. You will have a dedicated lifelong friend
Just lost our second rescued Doberman. No finer dog in the world. Bred to be your best friend and protector. Extremely smart.
I love my 2 labradoodles-—very little shedding, very easy to train, and they are the queens of the doggie park.
They are quiet and well behaved in the house (we don’t have a yard we can fence in) and are the perfect companions for people like me who are 2 years older than dirt.
B.S. My Yorkie is perfect.
They range in size from a smallish 18 pounds to a largish 35 pounds. A little soft (they are after all Spaniels) but not a frou-frou dog despite their small size. Friend of mine owned the HRC high point Boykin, GRHRCH "Mule", who passed away this past summer at the age of 12.
Basically, they are an undersized Chocolate Lab with dreadlocks. That's my undersized Chocolate Lab Shelley on the right, sharing a joke with her good friend Hooch:
" . . . and then the Traveling Salesdog said . . . "
We have a 13-year-old Blue Heeler. I didn’t think I would like this breed but she’s a doll.
Best dogs for us have been Border Collies and this Blue Heeler. I guess when we lose her we might think about another Border Collie, or maybe a Sheltie, or maybe a standard Collie. Something that’s ready to ride in the truck, round up cows, play with the kids ...
You can always adopt a senior of whatever breed. I will stick with big GSDs, and whatever doggy loves me.

An older yellow lab fit the bill too.
Small dogs are OK, especially if they have a proper guard instinct. They are also much easier to handle when either you or THEY are injured or sick. They also live longer so less frequently keep running into that old dog problem.
OTOH, a big serious dog when not medically troubled, can be much better at protecting, and possibly even helpful to lean on! LLOL. I suggest a big service dog, with a network attached to take care of it when the dog gets too sick and old.
My maltipoo agrees with this list.
Are there dogs nowadays that are NOT named Elvis or Rocky, and come WITHOUT cute ribbons in their furs and without little doggie raincoats? I’ll take one.
