Nigerian authorities today began arresting gay men after legislation was quietly approved criminalising homosexuality and imposing prison terms up to 14 years for breaking the new law.
Several gay couples were taken into custody in the countrys majority-Muslim north, and rights groups feared that others would be targeted across the West African country.
Goodluck Jonathan, Nigerias president, signed the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act into law on January 7, but there was no public report of the new law until journalists obtained a copy of the act on Monday.
It prohibits homosexuals from even meeting in groups of two or more, bans marriage or civil unions between people of the same sex, and criminalises gay clubs and events.
Reuben Abati, the presidential spokesman, said Nigerians were happy with the new law. It makes Nigeria the 38th African nation to enact legislation persecuting gay people.

This is one way to reduce AIDS
Interesting that the jihadist north, where the Hausa, who make even the majority of Somalis seem completely moderate and civil, are the majority passed it but the South, populated by a majority of Christian Igbo, is not taking part in this crackdown. If you are in support of this kind of crackdown, I suppose in a way it places you on the same side as the jihadists.
Gay or straight, no one deserves to be arrested, tortured, and imprisoned for anything like this.
This is a serious human rights issue.
Persecution of sodomites, persecution of Christians — to which will the Regime give its attention.
>> This is a serious human rights issue.
Sodomy is a human right? I suppose AIDS is a human right too.
love to see it happen here.
Start out in saaaaay San Francisco and Hollywood
Too funny
The rate of AIDS infections will plummet, and the media will completely ignore it.
“How about they crack down on email scammers? “
If it starts to drop off after this......
He has a cousin in the U.S. named Johnny B. Goode.

Imprisoned for what, exactly?
This is a serious human rights issue.
Thus, you show that you have swallowed a vat of koolaid.
This has nothing at all to do with "human rights," which is a smokescreen for imposed homo-fascism. This is about BEHAVIOR. No one is arrested just because they have same sex attraction, but when they ACT on these attractions in PUBLIC, it is properly a crime.
The only proven way to stop AIDS is to sit on one’s @$$ and keep one’s mouth shut.
In 1700’s Virginia the punishment was death. They sure weren’t pushing homosexual marriage back then. Am I advocating arrest? No. But the pendulum has swung waaay too far the other way. Sexually deviant acts shouldn’t be celebrated or supported.
Nor should they punished for it. It’s no ones business what two adults do in the privacy of their own homes. It’s not the government’s business. It’s none of your business. And it’s certainly not worth someone spending 10+ years in prison.
There is a happy medium between gays getting married and gays getting arrested/killed. Nigeria has gone way too far and should lose any favorable status with the US.
Absolutely, which of course is why the Northern Nigerian Muslims - who are known fro being fanatical, intolerant and ferociously opposed to all other way’s of life, even by Islam’s standards, are the ones leading this charge for violation of human rights. If you know anything about Nigeria’s history, particularly in the 1960s, you know that you want to be very careful when taking sides with the northern half on anything.
THEY are pushing acceptance of their deviancy on the country. It damn well IS our business!
Like someone said, "Love that dare not speak it's name now will not shut the hell up".
I don't care what they do but don't force acceptance on me and stop recruiting school kids. They insist on using the courts and the force of government and they are not passive so neither will I be.
I’ll take God’s side. It’s called Sodomy for a reason. Have you heard of that city?
