With palm trees lining a promenade bathed in soft sunlight, it is easy to imagine that you are strolling along a beach on the Cote D'Azur.
An angler wearing a light sweater sits at the end of a jetty, keeping an eye on the three fishing lines he has dropped into the still water. Birds hunt for food as though it is mid-summer.
Just two things spoil the illusion of being in the South of France - the pebble, rather than sandy beach, and the displays of Olympic souvenirs on sale in small boutiques. Although the shops are also still selling beach balls and other summertime paraphernalia.

Having the winter Olympics in the warmest place in the host country. Go figure.
The Olympic Committee picked a warm place to hold the Winter Olympics on purpose so they can help push the “global warming” meme.
Sochi always seemed - to me at least - a rather odd choice to hold the Winter Olympics; it’s known as the “Russian Riveria” and it’s one of the very few places in Russia that has a subtropical climate. Winters in Sochi are generally mild.
As big as Russia is, perhaps an area where the climate is more ideally suited to actual winter games might have been a better choice. But, that’s just my two cents.
Parking it in a hotbed of terrorism seems kind of odd as well. (However if anyone is going to be serious about security the Russians will)
Maybe the summer Olympics can be in Damascus or Kabul.
How many tickets would they have sold for an Olympics in Siberia?
IT’S GORE-BULL WARMING, I TELL YA!!
I thought part of the appeal of Sochi is that people could experience warm temperatures near the coast and head up the slopes where conditions would be alpine.
Sounds a lot like Vegas, less than an hour away you can be skiing up in the mountains, while temperatures in the valley are in the 60s.
I didn’t know a Siberian town entered a bid.
Anyways, I do not care where they have the Olympics. If it’s true Russia is spending $50 Billion on them, then it’s $50 billion wasted.

You are right. The mountains above Sochi should be okay for the games. One good snow between now and the games should do it. Sochi is supposed to be very beautiful.
Yep, they will be paid nicely for being the useful idiots
The only thing crazier is if Roger Goodell decided to hold the Super Bowl in NY in early Feb.
Especially so, considering Barry and The Mooch won't be there.

Less than an hour? Where is that?
Mt. Charleston.
The Caucasus are higher mountains than the Urals, no? I guess the other choice would be those mountains that range from Western Mongolia to the Bering Sea - maybe Vladivostok would be the host city in that case - or possibly one further west (Novosibirsk, perhaps).
Warm as the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980?
