This was, after all, the fellow who labeled religion as the “opiate of the masses” although that comment has been misunderstood as an expression of contempt. It was not - his point was that religion served to comfort and anesthetize the masses against their oppressive circumstances. “Passionate Christian”? I don’t know how anyone could get that impression.
