This was the “Bonus Army”.

WWI vets were given bonds for their serrvice - payable something like 25 years after the end of the war.

Unfortunarely, the Great Depression came along and the vets wanted the government to pay off early.

They gathered in camps along the Mall in DC - similar to “Hoovervilles” or “Occupy Wall Street.”

The government’s position was “a deal is a deal” and that it didn’t have the money at the time anyway.

Thus, the Army was ordered to clear the vets off of the Mall ...
