One possible solution for you...which I am currently using...is to install the free Virtual Box on WinXP and install a Linux OS on the VM. You can set the VM to bridge the NIC and then disable TCP/IP and MS Windows Client on the XP machine.
Use the XP OS for utility work and use the Linux VM for anything needing internet access. Close to zero vulnerability. Especially after 4/8/2014. Works like a charm for me.

Thanks. That is a good idea as it avoids the shut down/reboot issue. I am using Virtual Box on a separate Linux machine with Whonix installed within Virtual Box. That's a solution to a different problem though. :-)
