We have a very high output oven - gas - and make really great pizza several times a week.

The oven, with a large pizza stone in it, preheats at 500F for almost an hour.

We don’t have much buildup of ook in there.

Our old oven - we did the self-clean thing - - - once.

I left DH and DS#1 in charge of firing up the self-cleaning oven recently.

Came home to a house full of smoke and fire-extinguisher powder all over the kitchen. We are still finding some of the powder. Apparently some recently repaired wiring was repaired with some cheap tape, started smoking and DS#1 went into action.

That said, we have no idea what kind of disaster might have transpired if he was not there. Since the oven was nuked, I got a new range out of the deal.

BAH! Don’t listen to any of these do-gooders!

Look what you got for very little:

1. Your oven is clean.
2. You had an adventure.
3. You drank while doing it.
4. You made it a quasi-outdoor experience.

I clean mine every quarter or so, so I won’t have nearly as much fun as you did, but you’ve inspired me to hit the ‘auto-destruct’ button on mine once again.

Good for you !!!

Oh, so that’s what that setting is for! When I bought a turkey from the store it said “clean turkey first” and so when I put it into the oven and hit the Clean button I figured everything would be OK. Nobody from the Fire Department could figure out why it didn’t work either.

They ALWAYS do that if you have much buildup at all.

The lesson is the same as when you do interior painting...

wait until you can open the windows.

I’ve used the “Self-Clean” feature a few times on my propane over. Every time, without fail, one of the ceramic ignition coils burns out, and I have to spend the $100 to get a new one.

I finally bought one from a parts store that offers a “lifetime warranty” - so, next time, I just have to spend 10% (about 9 bucks) to renew the warranty.

If the exhaust fan is clean and functioning properly, it should carry that smoke out regardless of how thick it is via the little duct/chimney venting the oven interior to around the stovetop...

If you cleaned it as often as recommended, there would have been little smoke.

There's some blatant, serious oven inequality goin' on here .. I feel so disenfranchised (or somethin') !

OK so we know you haven't cleaned your oven in 10 years. You found out the hard way why you should clean it at least once a year. Then the self-cleaning feature is a blessing.

Now...to save your dryer from catching on fire, and to dry clothes better...go clean out the lint. And, not just in the lint filter, get down inside and in the back were the hose attaches to the outside vent.

These are things women learn and men ask "What did you do all day?" LOL
