Venezuela is one of the world’s most violent nations, according to Reuters. The official annual murder rate is 39 per 100,000 people, but local activists estimate the actual murder rate is nearly twice as high.

By comparison, the overall annual murder rate for the City of Chicago is about 16 per 100,000. Of course, this figure varies widely by neighborhood.

In other words, the national murder rate for Venezuela is as bad - or worse - than that of the most dangerous neighborhoods of Chicago.
