Word For The Day, Tuesday January 7, 2013
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
vortex [vawr-teks]
-n, pl vortices, vortexes
1.a whirling mass of water, especially one in which a force of suction operates, as a whirlpool.
2.a whirling mass of air, especially one in the form of a visible column or spiral, as a tornado.

4.a state of affairs likened to a whirlpool for violent activity, irresistible force, etc.
5.something regarded as drawing into its powerful current everything that surrounds it:

My biggest problem os the two retarded vents within 4 feet of the lower level thermostat. One over, one under, fcol.
So, the 2nd floor main level, always is a tad off.
Only the floor gets cold in the lower level, but...i have two thick Persian rugs, from my MiL’s house, one at either end (xbox,computer/tv area) the only cold spot...lol, is the tile I have to walk across when I’m up in the middle of the night, to use the head.
That does not help insomnia, lol
I always keep a couple of space heaters of some sort-I like the little radiator ones, and I keep one little tower for heating a small space fast-living in less than nice housing with my 1st husband-when he was in the military with little rank, and as broke new college grads with a kid, I learned to never rely on the housing we could afford to have adequate, or even functioning heat, and to carry my own with me. Good thing, too-I even have two wood stoves with me, but this place is unsafe for an open or wood fire, in my opinion, so space heaters it is...
Thats what I do, 67, and since I awake at 5, I put it up to 71-2 around 5:45, before the household morning starts. As soon as it’s comfy, back down.
Same at Dinner, unless the oven is on. That damned tile heats up like charcoal.nice in Winter, brutal in Summer. Cant open the blinds late in the day.
I like the sealed radiator types. At our previous home, we had very ineffectual oil heat. House was built in 1921, and the wind whistled into the house.
And I abhor the cold.
We were talking yesterday, about the love/non-love of cooking...
Here’s an easy one, 15 min or so.
Sauce, penne. (Boiling the pasta al dente is the time consumer)
Chop up a little Basil, pinch of salt, ground pepper, and at the last moment before serving, stir in one of those 8 oz tubs of Gorgonzola. 2lbs,2jars, cheese, total cost, about 10$ and makes Ravioli, taste like a booger.
Which is not to say that I know what boogers taste like, (yes, dave and Neo that disclaimer was for the inevitable)
Point being, of your cooking as a chore..thats as easy and tasty as you can get.
My wife always adds a small 8 oz can of tomato sauce to jarred spaghetti sauce. Plus some garlice, etc.
Cuts down the sweetness of the jarred sauce and extends it a bit.
Mmm. I will have to try that trick. Sounds like a good one.
There’s a big screen tv and leather sofas down there and nothing cheezy about it. You’re picturing a basement family room in my parents house. This house is 14 years old and the basement was finished with hardwood floors and Berber rugs. I don’t go down there but xshub will watch games down there and xsboy entertained his friends there this past weekend. It’s a walkout basement on the fam room side with a guest bedroom in the back and a butlers pantry and a mirrored exercise room on the other.
My friend always adds ricotta to his pasta casseroles to add to the flavor. Rigatoni or penne...whatever. I love it that way now, too.
I shave and sautee the garlic, use1/2 for the butter, and 1/2 for the sauce...garlic butter is insane...I’m shocked most Italian restaraunts don’t use that trick. Easiest crowd p,easer, except adding bacon.
But, i was talking quick dirty, and easy, as I was considering the women...
No one would eat that— Gorgonzola. Maybe xsboy. I would but not the others. Xsboy liked the chicken in the coq au vin but turned up his nose at the mushrooms and pearl onions.
Is there a dumbwaiter to take stuff from the pantry to the kitchen?
That would be cool.
No and no laundry chute either.
Tomato Paste!? I use that as a thickener, but for a mac and cheese style, i use peeled tomatoes.
There are so many things that don’t seem to “belong” here, and it makes me wonder what the story was originally with this property-I can never resist a mystery.
Regrettably-I’d estimate maybe 30-40 years ago, someone clear cut most of the native trees and other vegetation and planted non-native and invasive stuff-Oaks native to Virginia and the Carolinas, those damn Ligustrum trees that make berries the birds eat and sh** all over the place-and the blooms stink and make me sneeze, etc. And the entire front and side fenceline(s) are lined with evergreen Chinese jasmine.
There is also a fancy little unused fish pond under one of the few native cedar trees, with concrete statues and a fountain beside it. When Husky girl and I were walking this afternoon, I noticed that the water in it was frozen solid-I hadn’t really noticed the thing before, but it was probably a pretty water feature once. None of that fits the present owner’s profile, and makes me wonder what the first one-a summer place person, obviously-was like.
The whole property reminds me of an old neighborhood in SA-Woodlawn Ave area-where we lived for awhile when I was about 3 or 4 and my dad was getting ready to go overseas from Lackland AFB. The whole property is just out of place where it is, designed to be trimmed and manicured like a city lot, not rural acreage on the river-not at all desirable to someone like me. No wonder no one but a lunatic weirdo wants or takes care of it to the point that it has fallen into ruin so fast..
I only included you out of courtesy. I knew that already ;)
Though you could have xsboy try it at his SU residence

If the large screen was in the lower level, you couldn’t pry my ass out of there with a chisel...
Kids got that area....I got the Sunroom...lol
Lower level would have been nice bc the weights and and elliptical are down there.
