Until this morning at 5AM
14 degrees here in the midlands of South Carolina. Brrrrr.
LOL.
You’ve never been to Minot North Dakota.
Used to have to go out on the flightline there when it was -69 and up (-70 was when they halted work except for brief shifts of a few minutes each by essentials...that was for the humans, they pulled the security police dogs off the line when it was only -30)
And I went out there to the alert facilities in uniform, which was a skirt and stockings. No fatigues or pantsuits for women back then, those came later. Lucky my boss let me keep bluejeans in my desk to wear to and from the parking lot.
Just cover up and keep a source of heat going. Some folks survived stranded in their cars during a 2 day blizzard by having a candle to burn when the gas ran out.
OK, I laughed out loud at 7:03 a.m.!
I remember one day when they cancelled school in Westmoreland PA, it was -26. We kids all went ice skating.
Best ice ever, clear thick and smooth as glass.
I grew up in Western Kentucky and am now just south of Memphis in Mississippi. Heard yesterday on FOX news that It has not been this cold in Memphis in over a hundred years. I can believe it. It is now 7 degrees at 6:05 AM
In 2009, at my mother’s funeral it was -40°F in Lake Geneva. I live in Norway then and now and my Norwegian wife says to me “Now I know why you moved to a warm country” My family was like this was no big deal and she could hardly stand it.
This Texan spent 3 1/2 years in Williston, ND.
You people know cold—LOL!
I loved living there and have kept up with my friends there. We’re back home in TX now—and happy to be here.
I’ve heard about the boom and growth in Williston——I doubt I’ll ever return. I want to remember it as it was when we lived there all those years ago.
While living in No. Wisconsin I have memories and photos of our outside thermometer showing -58, -59 and -60 below zero F back in the late 70’s. We had a hot water heating system with pipes running thru the entire house. Pipes froze and broke INSIDE the house due to the extreme cold. You DO NOT want to experience anything like that.
When the temp gets down to -40 F, it’s just plain DAMN COLD.
It’s -20 here this AM.
The current temp here in north central WI is -23 ° F with a projected high for the day of -6 ° F. Yesterday our high for the day was -17 ° F. Wind chill currently -51 ° F. Well finally start to warm up tomorrow (Wed) when temp goes above 0 ° for the first time since Sat.

Drove from TX to Racine WI in Feb ‘66, with FIL, wife and 18 m/o daughter. Horribly cold from OK, up through Chicago and to Racine, with lots of snow. ..........Was -24 in Racine and we spent 5 days there just visiting with the eight married siblings of FIL, drinking tons of coffee and loads of kringle. Nights were at local bars where beer ruled and family groups were gathered. ...Great family community and small town atmosphere where it seemed everyone knew one another.
I spent most of days with layered clothing and my Navy peacoat sitting on the floor near a heat register. One day they challenged me to do a tobaggan run down a steep hill. I was barely a third of the way down when the liquids froze up in my nose and I could barely breathe when I reached the end. They had to help me into the car. ...I was physically fit and only 23 at the time! ....It’s been in the teens here in TX the past few days, and at 71 I am suffering!
Is that a silver oak leaf?
I grew up in MN. and in the days when there was a dress code.
The girls could wear slacks to school, under their dresses, if it was zero or colder. We had to remove the slacks in the rest-room before class.
I walked to school each day. We had no school bus but could take the city bus for 10 cents each way. In grade school we went home for lunch if we lived less than a mile. If it was zero or more we could bring a bag lunch. Hot lunches were not served at school back then until you got to junior high.
I don’t recall any of us minding these rules. We had a good time on our walks. We actually felt special to get to wear our slacks at all!
It’s two below in the Finger Lakes. Hep me, hep me, I’m stuck in the middle of a polar vortex!
A few years back we had a young USAF exchange officer fly out from some frozen hellhole in Alaska where the temp was around -40F and arrived in Sydney where the temp was 101F.
Poor bugger nearly carked it from thermal shock.
Oh, and for the curious, tomorrow in Canberra we are expecting a low of 46F and a high of 77F.
I also have to admit to never having seen snow up close. The closest I’ve been is seeing a very light dusting of white on a mountain about 20 miles away that melted by mid afternoon.
I’ve got -22 right now. Fortunately the wind died down some with the sunset.
there ya go, and yet here in sunny -5 Maryland 1000 parents are beetching on the school system facebook site that it’s too cold for their delicate kids to go to school and the whole system should be shut down
Is 14 below here right now...brrrr
I have one of those heated water bowls outside for whatever might want to get a drink...it’s frozen solid.
You might like this ... chime in
I walked to Grammar School and rode the city bus to High School. I remember looking down the street for the bus to be sighted. And I remember the bus blowing past my stop because it was packed with people. Thats when it really felt cold....
