A news article on Drudge that cannot be excerpted here (New Zealand Herald) made mention of the now increased need for further Carbon Offset due to 3 added ships involved in the rescue. My added question is this, why do so many people equate planting a tree with a tree growing to maturity? Every time I see some idiot talking about a tree being used to mitigate some carbon-producing activity, I want to ask, are you making the commitment to grow that number of trees to maturity, taking into account replacing failed seedlings? Or is it just a feel-good "See what a good guy/gal I am"?

Why did this ship of fools need to go to Antarctica as readily available satellite imagery would have shown the Antarctic ice is growing not shrinking? Strange how the media is not reporting that these idiots went to Antarctica expecting to see melting glaciers and instead were trapped by massive ice that stymied the efforts of two other ice breakers to rescue them. If there is any better example of how global warming has become a religion is that these fools feel compelled to atone for their carbon sins by planting trees to appease the global warming gods.

The whole idea of carbon offsets due to planting trees is nonsensical. Look at anywhere on earth where there are warm temperatures and water. It's GREEN. That's right, stuff grows where there's water and warmth. Enough stuff grows to mostly utilize all of the available water, nutrients, and warmth. All anyone does by planting something different is slightly alter the time delay before the carbon is returned. A tree stores carbon until the wood rots. The carbon in weeds usually returns to the atmosphere quickly.

The only way to delay it longer is to bury the carbon somewhere where it won't return to the atmosphere quickly. That's why you should send your old newspapers to a landfill rather than recycle them.
