Records will be challenged, if not broken Monday and Tuesday as a polar vortex dives south across central and eastern United States and sets up squarely over the Ohio River Valley. This next storm system will be some of the worst weather, in regards to the temperatures, that we have seen in more than 5 years. Some of the records for Tuesday have been in place for more than 60 years and in some cases over 100 years!
FLASH FREEZE: A dramatic warm up will occur Saturday and Sunday across Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia with temperatures warming into the 40s and some highs on Sunday near 50 degrees. This warm air will be detrimental to the dangerous travel conditions that will set up later on in the evening. The storm system will begin as rain for 2 to 3 hours at best and rapidly change over to snow. The rain will make the ground saturated and that layer of water will freeze rapidly. This is called a "flash freeze" and is one of the most dangerous setups for anyone traveling across the region.

This sounds like how the blizzard of 79 started out
The all time record low for our location here is -23F.The forcast for Monday night is -21F.It’s going to be nasty with the wind chill.
Global Warming causes Global Cooling. All the new warm air in the arctic pushes all the cold air south. And this was predicted by all the climate scientists and climate models and if you question this, you hate science.
Reminds me of January 1985.
Columbus,Oh and Knoxville,TN Conus low of -24F.
Wind Chill unknown.
“This sounds like how the blizzard of 79 started out”
I think I remember that one. When Rockefeller was in office? The one that kinda never happened?
I was just thinking about that today My cousin from Florida was visiting us, and was so impressed by the temp that he ran outside without his shirt, stood by the big thermometer in the yard and my dad took his picture. Quickly!!
79 was a lot worse than they are saying this will be.
The 1979 Blizzard started out as temperatures in the 60s with heavy rain then temperatures and atmospheric pressure dropped like a rock (atmospheric pressure dropped to record lows).
Where I lived at the time there was a thunder storm going on in the middle of the blizzard.
The next day after it was over my fathers car tires were frozen fast in about two inches of ice. My cars engine compartment was packed solid with snow.
We had a family friend stay with use for three days because he worked in our town could not get out of our town to the next town where he lived that was only about 10 miles away.
It doesnt sound like that kind of storm is shaping up and I really hope it doesnt.
I’ve been up for 21 hours and worked most of it. I read “record breaking polar BEARS will invade Kentucky,...”
:)
I hope you are right. My experience of that blizzard and the aftermath is one I would not care to repeat especially since I am so much older now!!
Ha! I had to chop wood most of the night as our oil lines froze and cracked. No Furnace.
I would make it for about 20 minutes at a time. We had a full house, as most were trapped with a half foot of snow on the ground.
It was cold.
One effect of a hurricane is to pump warm Sub Tropical air up high into the atmosphere during a time when the Ocean currents carry a large amount of heat energy, mainly from the Sun.
If the Hurricane is strong enough the warm air might be carried over the Poles, descend as it cools, and displace the much colder Polar air.
The general effect of this large scale mixing is to weaken the strength of Winter Storms that move from the Poles toward the mid latitudes.
Last year, the good news was that no major Hurricane hit the USA, and the bad news is that this Winter could be a lot colder as a result.
BTW, why is the shortest day of the year NOT the Middle of Winter?
Today was the coldest day here in several years in North Florida for the wind chill. Arctic air made wet and raw coming off the ocean Never made it 50 despite a bright sun. Wont have a hard freeze tonight because of the ocean effect but the next one is supposed to be from the NW and it will give us a hard freeze.
I broke down and turned on the heat today for the first time. Last winter I never used it.
"Baby, It's Cold Outside"?
Don’t know.
