Wow!
It's been ten or so years since I followed an FR fundraising thread. The dedication, the technichal dexterity, the shear perseverence of the leaders is just astounding and humbling.
I believe, the last time I was really paid attention, there was a discussion concerning the servers to be purchased, the support required for such, and the necessity for funding.
Back in those days I would provide some dusty nugget bumps that were a year or two old.I hadn't any idea of the requirments to support the servers. The cost was astounding.
Meanwhile, Prodigy died off, Prodigy Internet died off, and I signed on with a dialup.
That puter died and I kind of drifted off as my net access was through my employer and limited, of necessity, by descretion. More so as my employer's IT folks got capable, and numerous.
That history being related, FR jumps!!!!
FR is by far the fastest sight I routinely use. The IT support here is outstanding!
That speed costs money! Get off your wallets. If you use this site, pony up. It is ridiculous that these oh so dedicated folks, have to labor for months to beg bucks. There is not a site user here who can observe this without drawing an obvious conclusion.
A tiny cadre of dedicated supportive members are having to work for months to garner sufficient money to carry the load for a vast number of users who are quite casual about their obligations.
I saw a contribution of $6.90 mailed in. No doubt that contributor counted pennies from their income and did the best they could do.
A subscription service seem obvious, but, the need for FR is beyond an accounting of cost!
The need is as important as Paul Revere's ride and the North Church light. It aint by sea folks, it's by our land!
Let us make fundraising threads brief, let us join the ranks of the monthly supporters.
If that's not possible for you due to fluctuating income, then make a yearly obigation. hell it's no worse than an annual property tax or income tax bill. You just gotta figure out a way to make it happen.
Make it so!
Pat
May you now trounce the world...
Ah, as Less Nesman said, “those godless tornadoes” ... So how ‘bout that editing function for posts, Jim? :)
Pinging Doctor Laz!
Thanks to Jim Thompson, and his brother John! I don't know who to thank most, BUT, FreeRepublic is THE GO TO site!
We had a long drawn out debate on that about a dozen or so years ago. The no edit school won the day. Hard to debate a changing target. Yeah, we can keep a change log, but it gets messy. Also complicates the moderator function.
Ping to 23. Forgot to add you on the address line!
Thank you very much, WVKayaker!
I am now living in Davao City, in the Philippines, and it is 4:30 PM!
Don't thank me, Jim, as it is all of us that appreciate what you and John do to make this our "home"...
Happy New Year, and I hope it is the best year we ever had!
BTTT
I just checked again to make sure my monthly FR support account is still active.
It’s good to go.
This old timer is in complete agreement with you.
I laugh every time I see some chucklehead talk about running FR for "less than $100 a year" by using some "free/low cost" forum software an/or on some "free" blogging site.
In all these years, I've never encountered another forum that has the quality, consistency, and readibility of FR.
Following any thread (as well as jump-backs to previous comments, hotlinks out to other threads, etc.) is simply the best there is.
In closing, I would add my earnest request to all non-contributors: "Contribute to FR. You'll never know what you've got til it's gone!"
“I consider myself a guest in JimRob’s living room, and try to conduct myself accordingly. In return, he provides me with more informative, entertaining, and thought-provoking content EVERY DAY than I can possibly get tired of.”
Well said sir, thank you for articulating my impression better than most.
Use it or loose it folks. Pay the piper!
