The best rendition of the National Anthem I ever heard was used by Maryland Public Television for its sign-off back in the ‘80s. It was done by a black singer (I think) with opera training. There was no bending notes or singing ahead of or behind the note. It was done as purely as possible, and with incredible strength. When she got to the part “The land of the fre-eee” her voice went up at least an octave just as effortlessly as if someone had turned a dial. It made you shiver.
