Doctors Say Racing’s (Michael) Schumacher Is ‘Fighting for His Life’
NY Times ^ | 12/30/2013 | JOHN F. BURNS

LONDON — Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in the history of Formula One motor racing, with seven world drivers’ championships, is “fighting for his life” with brain injuries sustained on Sunday when he hit his head on a rock in a skiing accident in the French Alps, his doctors said on Monday.

They said it was too early to say whether the 44-year-old German would survive, or what the extent of his brain injuries might be. They said his family, including his wife, Corinna, and his teenage son and daughter, were at his bedside, and that the medical team were working continuously to save his life.

“Unfortunately, he had some lesions to his brain when he came in, he had some diffuse injuries to his brain, but we can’t really say what the outcome will be,” Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, an anesthesiologist who is leading Schumacher’s medical team at the Grenoble University Hospital Center, told a news conference.

“He’s in a critical situation and we can say he’s fighting for his life,” Dr. Payen said. “We judge him to be in a very serious condition.” He added, “We are working continuously, hour by hour, but it’s too early to say what’s going to happen, and to give a prognosis.”

“...he gets taken out by a rock on a ski slope”

Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy were murdered by trees.

Ya pays yer money, ya takes yer chances.

Wonder how many other non famous skiers this happens to.

Just thinking . . . there probably are a billion more humans on this planet that have heard of him than the most "famous" American sportsman (pick one).

It's ok if you're not a fan of F1, but just because you haven't heard of someone--doesn't make them "non famous."

Reminds me of Mike Hailwood. Races bikes his whole life and dies in the family car because of a careless truck driver.

Boy your are jogging my memory, wow, the guy who rode the 250cc six cylinder Honda if my memory is correct and it sounded like they had summoned the hounds from the underworld. Prayers up for Mike S, he always carried himself as a gentlemen, compare that to the hip-hop thugs we deal with in our American Sports, they could have learned from him....

This one was probably the most horrible because it happened live during a competition. Saw the video of it once, never want to see it again.

Just watched it; it was horrible.

I hope Schumacher recovers, but chances are he won’t ever be the same again. Head injuries are very bad.

Prayers for him.

Yes- Mike The Bike was a class act also. I got to see and hear the Honda six at a vintage event once. As one of my friends said, it sounded like a panther passing a kidney stone!

That was a great Top Gear episode. I definitely got the opinion he was a class act besides a terrific race car driver.

"he turned Ferrari back into a perennial F1 winner"

Fixed. :) Ferrari had a proud history in F1 before they signed Schumacher (and to be honest, it didn't help that he brought a few key personnel from Benetton with him when he joined).

The wife of Liam Neeson (Natasha Richardson).

That one really saddened me, I always thought she was one of the most beautiful actresses.

You just never know with recovery from brain injuries. I hope for the best for him, but I always remember Stirling Moss retiring after his head injuries at Goodwood in 1962. He could still drive better than almost anyone, but he knew that the championship edge was lost.

I still consider Moss to be one of the greatest race drivers of all time, along with Tazio Nuvolari.

Michael Schumacher’s family in bedside vigil after ski accident

The family of German motor-racing champion Michael Schumacher are at his bedside as he fights for life following a skiing accident in the French Alps.

Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, said his wife, Corinna, daughter Gina Maria and son Mick are in a state of shock at the Grenoble hospital.

The seven-time Formula 1 champion suffered head injuries on Sunday in a fall at the resort of Meribel.

He has been put in a medically-induced coma to relieve pressure on his brain.

“The family is not doing very well, obviously. They are shocked,” Sabine Kehm told reporters.

Prof Jean-Francois Payen, of Grenoble University Hospital’s intensive care unit, told a news conference that they could not give a prognosis for the 44-year-old driver.

“He is in a critical state in terms of cerebral resuscitation. We are working hour by hour,” he said.

Prof Payen said that if Schumacher had not been wearing a helmet “he wouldn’t be here now”.
