Ask HIM to prove his contention. You can’t prove a negative. Let him show you the law, pre-2008.

Just consider all the restuarants which are making changes. If they were required to provide health insurance for full timers there wouldnt be many full timers at those types of jobs.

Especially the expensive benefits required by obamacare.

Haha ... oh I’m being re-educated. Going back to school to be a unionized, clock-punching EMT was just the beginning ...

As of 1998 there was no such requirement. I worked full time for two different employers before that time who had more then 50 employees and they did not offer health insurance.

What he was probably confusing was a requirement that employers above 50 employees must provide family/maternity leave. That’s the only previous requirement that I can recall that was specifically for businesses over 50 employees.

Anyone who “get’s hgot” because you disp[uite their ‘facts’ is an idiot

Sending him facts would not help - he is beyond repair until obamacare bites him in the ass personally

There was never a time before 0bamaCare. Your chocolate ration will be reduced for suggesting that there was.

Prior to obamacare, there has NEVER been a federal requirement for ANY company to offer health insurance. However, if a company DOES offer such insurance, there are federal laws that govern certain aspects of that insurance, for example the COBRA law.

Health Insurance has been regulated by the states and not the federal govt. In California, employers with 50 or more were required to offer insurance. As the employees increased, the plans were increased and the rate decreased. But that is California. In California in all group plans ( min of 2 ) pre existing conditions were not allowed. This has been the law for many years. But not for individuals. But it is east to form a group of 2. You only need a husband and wife doing house cleaning. You don’t have to make a lot of money, just form a partnership, get a bus license, and now you are eligible. Worked here.

Your FIL is full of it. I remember back in the 80s when some companies started offering insurance. Before that you went to the doctor and paid $25 and maybe 5$ for a shot. If you went to the hospital you worked out a payment plan. And the costs were fairly low. In the 70s I worked in a plant and was a member of a union. When my wife got pregnant we started making payments into a fund at the hospital. Sorta’ like a lay-away plan.

Ask him if companies are required to provide 401k plans. They’re not.

re hospitals - you can still work out a payment plan,
but without coverage its possible for really unpleasant
financial side effects for a while given todays costs.

cancer can easily run up a bill over 100k.

The man is a snake and has made it his life’s work to speak from both sides of his mouth. The silver lining in this is he is NOT my wife’s father but a fellow who came along 10 years after my natural F-I-L passed away (prior to my meeting my wife).

Thanks to all for the thoughtful replies.
