Just looked up the Grayback. Looks like that mainstay of sub movies, removal of an infected appendix by the Pharmacist's Mate, really did happen on the Grayback. Very successful career.
FYI, the Indiana Naval Armory seems to have lost the Grayback Memorial, but I found it at the Indiana Military Museum. :-))

I’m not surprised they moved it. One wonders why Indianapolis would have a Naval Armory to begin with. Not since defense cuts eliminated the White River Flotilla anyway.
