A winter storm bringing ice and whipping winds to upstate New York and northern Vermont knocked out power to thousands of customers as officials urged motorists to avoid traveling in dangerously slick conditions.
More than 95,000 utility customers woke up without power Sunday morning in New York, Vermont and Maine because of widespread ice accumulations.
In New Yorks St. Lawrence County, almost 2 inches of ice had accumulated early Sunday, coating tree limbs and power lines, county dispatch operations supervisor Jim Chestnut said.

Better get used to sitting in the dark shivering once the EPA closes more coal fired electric generating plants to save us from global warming
Those “Rust Belt” states are devout Democrat voters.
Let them freeze to death in the dark.
Then, the state can be repopulated with real Americans, people who actually understand and support the Constitution.
Here in southern NH, it is hanging in at 36 degrees with a gloomy drizzle to match the Obama Economic Recovery!
South of the front in the Southern Tier, it’s 59. About 15 miles away over the Chautauqua Ridge in Silver Creek, it’s 37. On the right side of things — for once.
Gorgeous weekend in Ventura. Rode in my neighbors boat in the Parade of Lights last night with nothing but a sweatshirt on. Yay global worming!!
‘I believe that upstate New York Americans can handle a good winter.’
That may be, but how on earth are upstate New York illegal aliens bearing up in these dire climate change conditions?
Three feet of snow we can deal with. There is little anyone can do to prepare for a thousand pounds of ice bringing down trees.
“”there is warnings cow NW GA. Funky weather.””
You have to watch those cows, you know - saw one fly in a movie about tornadoes!!
We’re in Duluth, GA and it’s pretty dark with spells of pouring down rain....haven’t checked the temp but it’s probably warm as the cat wanted to go out on the screened in porch....
“”with nothing but a sweatshirt on””
You’re kidding, right????
Speaking as a native of the upper south, oh yes there is. Keep trees cut back away from the house, remove softwoods such as pine and poplar, bury electric lines, have your house wired for a generator panel, buy a generator, keep it in working order and keep fuel onhand to run it. Stock your pantry enough to make it through at least a week or two.
Like teenagers and sex, just because it's new to you doesn't mean it's new to everybody, lol.
“...just a little fog here in soviet Red Hampshire...”
Just a little fog?, I’m over by Barrington and we have freezing rain. The temp just jumped to 35 so hopefully it will start melting.
Removing pines? You mean clear cutting? lol
Seriously though the last storm we had like this was in 1999. It is rare for us.
That doesn’t mean there’s no way to prepare. I just told you how. We get several a year, usually.
Hah!! Okay, jeans, shirt and a sweatshirt for warmth. ;)
Lol fricken iPad.
Being from Flori-duh as you are, I would get off that high horse. After all, it is mostly thanks to Florida that we are stuck with an Obama second term. You Floridians went ahead and gave Obama your 29 electoral votes that helped put him over the top. Thanks guys. Also, back in 2000, you guys came within a few deer ticks of giving us Algore as president.
So a conservative bastion, Florida is not!
Get that pet to the vet! :)
