Do you think Doc Martin would agree with Phil Robertson?

I can hear Doc Martin.

"Your penis does not belong in his anus."

Advanced docs in the NHS are addressed as “Sir”. NOT “doctor”. And they will damned put you in your place.

My wife grew up in England and didn't move to America until she was in her 50's. I've never heard her mention this. She is over there now. When I Skype her tomorrow I'll ask about it.

Let me know. My fam in the UK won’t question “authority”. They say ‘nevermind’. However, my British hubby bitches about some authority in the US....but NEVER medical or academic authority. Says to me they “know more than we do”. Makes my blood boil.

It’s great, and one of the few culinary legacies from my ex-wife ;-) (The other was microwaved roast-beef, which comes in handy if you need a pair of sandals and don’t have an old jeep tire handy!)

I don’t care that much for celery, so for years have made it with a cup or so each of chopped carrots and green peppers. Try it sometime!

Yah. Maybe they know a lot of things that we don't, but that's a two way street. The upshot is that you have no choice, doctors are the gatekeepers. It's always been that way.

Good thing it has sub-titles. Those accents, while charming, are a little thick. 8^)

I was interested in your query about the Cornish accent. I hastily accessed IMBd (International Movie Data Base). I could not find one actor in the first ten named, from Cornwall. This on the television series about an abrupt well meaning doctor from old London Town, who has to work in a neat Cornish village. Now some of them do a fair rendering of Cornish, especially the portly gentleman who plays Mr Large.

Martin Clunes is from London and is a visiting medic as Doc Martin, so he is legit with his hardly discernible London speech. The nearest thing to certain American accents in England are West Country accents. Easy on the ear. An Australian accent is more of a kin to a harsh London accent (ducking head).

Anyway having not been in a NHS hospital for over fifty years, I am glad I emigrated to Canada (chuckle).

Actually a good show, we like it ALMOST as much as Downton Abbey. I believe they are filming one last season after a hiatus in 2012. You can stream season 2-5 on Netflix, 5 star rating. I believe Amazon Prime has all seasons available for streaming. Each season consists of just 8 episodes.

He's a doctor that can't stand the sight of blood. It's one of the best shows available on television. Along with Downton Abbey, it's the reason I coughed up the cash for a DVR.

Thanks for taking the time to post the link. Nice to see a good British series that I’d not heard of before.

Ah! Amazon Prime also has it. I dumped Netflix, they rarely had what I wanted to see. I’m afraid to get involved with a series on NF, because they cancelled Farscape when I was in the middle of watching it.

You’d be amazed how many different accents there are in different areas of The UK. The typical Stuffy Oxford accent to Liverpool to Yorkshire, since moving here I’ve noticed probably 10-15 different English accents. Don’t even start with Wales....

Great show, great actor.

I halfway suspect, though, that the actor would follow the usual mindless political path of actors. Hope I’m wrong.

Docotors anywhere may show offense at not being addressed as “Doctor” (specialists in the Commonwealth countries have traditionally been addressed as “mister” rather than doctor). Its not a socialist thing, its a doctor thing.

Reminds me of arrogant, elitist doctors who I challenged when I lived in the UK.

I've caught a few bits of the show, and the "doctor as god" factor is part of the joke. Doc Martin's uneasy relations with mere humans is a running story line, and gradually he learns to be human himself. It seemed a nice show from fairly minimal exposure.
