HELSINKI, FINLAND (CBS) – Your dog may be able to recognize your face in a photo.
That’s the latest from the University of Helsinki, which published the results of its study in the journal Animal Cognition this December.

Waait a minute, I thought dogs couldn’t see one dimensional images. I call foul. They may react to TV, but they cannot see it. They cannot see pictures either.
As for them recognizing you a long way off, they have a remarkable sense of smell and hearing. Dogs can find carion a long way off. Coyotes and wolves and some dogs can hear rodents under ground or under snow.
Animals see the world differently. This anthropomorphising needs to stop.
I have 6 watchracoons, 2 skunks, one possum, and a fisher that recognize me by sound of my walk at night & they can see in the dark. They lay out on the porch and guard the house against all trespassers at various times during the night,, but in wintertime they are utterly useless as watchcoons, watchskunks, etc....
Mrs. JohnnyP and I were hiking with our dog Homer. Homer must have went exploring on her own, because we lost sight of her. We called to her for a while, then worked our way back to the car. There was Homer, perched in the front seat, waiting for us. She had jumped in though the open window.
Hubby is a retired firefighter, 33 yrs. He used to work 2 on, 2 off, 2 on, 2 off, 2 on, 8 off, unless he was away on a fire. Our dogs always knew exactly when he was due to come home. On that day about half an hour before he would come home they would go lay in the living room (closest to the street) and they knew the sound of his truck when he turned the corner. As soon as they heard it they would get up and go sit by the back door and wait.
If he went away on a fire it really screwed them up. Lol. I used to tell them over and over.....he’s not coming. Eventually they would give up.
Not sure we understand them near as much as they understand us. I never have a regular schedule I come home anywhere between 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM, but per my wife I dog regularly goes and stands the hall watching the door just before I pull up to the house. And if I happen to be out of town she just mopes but doesn’t watch the door at all.
I doubt that. My dog barks at other dogs on tv, she barks at her own picture on the computer. I don’t think she recognizes anything or anyone.

Our 9 month Bichon/Szhitzu (Be-Szhit?) female barks at dogs on our wall-mount TV and runs around to the room behind the TV to find them.
My wife is a HUGE Oregon Ducks fan and uses a funny duck quack as her phone ringer. Our Bichon goes absolutely NUTS every time the phone starts quacking. If we should ever be assaulted by a herd of berserk wild ducks, we’re well protected.
We came back from Church one Sunday to find the box of donuts on the kitchen table empty. Our first Bichon had hidden them all in between the couch cushions. None of our Labs would have been so bold - or clever...
Mine knows when ill be home minutes before I pull in the drive according to my wife. I rarely come home at the same time. He also knows the differance in delivery trucks when he knows one is coming. The ups guy gives him pets and treats so he pops up and runs to the door happy a minute or two before the truck pulls up.. the FedEx guy won’t touch him or give him a treat. When he knows that guy is coming he barks twice at the door and goes back to sleep. I am sure he knows our vehicles by sounds but the ups guy had a van the other day instead of the big truck. He still knew he was coming. He also seems to know its not the normal driver. He does not get near as excited.
He is a hound so maybe his nose is that good.
Ours still will look behind the TV and even bark at the dog show. However, he is less disappointed now whe he can’t find someone. I suspect that the attention he gets with the TV has a bit to do with it. The mirror — he really is frustrated. He’s at least a good part French Bulldog by looks.
The British did a study/TV show about dogs who anticipated their owners’ returns.
It was ~really~ cool.

For the rest of his life, he hated ambulances and that particular horse.

I’ve had a few dogs...then I got German Shepherd.
I kept peacocks at one time. They could recognize the difference between the sound of our car engine, or a stranger’s. They would kick up a huge fuss whenever a stranger’s car drove into our property. but, they didn’t make much of a fuss at all when we came home.
My old cat could tell the difference between between a beer can pop top and a soda pop top. I’d come home from a weeklong trip and pop open a Miller Lite can and he’d come running. For the week, my GF and her grand kids were opening sodas and they never saw him.
My 11 year old cocker recognizes my daughter’s voice even over Facetime. She runs to the door barking and looking for her.

There’s almost a mind-meld, like some sort of psychic bond when you’re really close to a good dog. You’ve experienced it, I’ve experienced it myself. They know things from afar somehow.
When I see these alarm monitoring system commercials like ADT I laugh. I have an alarm system; two 100 pound dogs that can recognize friend from foe, will bark louder than any alarm system and can take hunk out of an intruders ass. ADT cant do that.
