‘Tis true that football was a minor sport when I was a young kid; however, what I posted said: “as a young person.” I.e., young adult, pre-Super Bowl, but not by much.
So minor then was football then that a family joke for decades was about my younger sister returning from a neighbor’s New Year’s party and, knowing somehow that it *meant* something, told us “Whitey Piddle” was there! We figured out she was referring to Y.A. Tittle.
Those games played in the bitter cold and blinding snow constituted a reason football became so popular that the Super Bowl phenomenon was able to develop. It might not work for the all-important half-time show.
