MURRIETA (CBSLA.com) Its the time of the year when Christmas decorations adorn houses for blocks in communities throughout the Southland.
But one entry in the Annual Holiday Home Decorating Contest in Murrieta that features a mythical creature from European folklore has sparked complaints from residents.
The house in the 37000 block of Floral Creek Circle features a large handcrafted Krampus, who is sometimes referred to as evil Santa or the Christmas devil and dates back to pre-Christian Germanic traditions.
With a doll on its back and a broomstick in its hand, the clawed black creature is perched on the second-story window of resident Stori Nagels home next to a sign reading Greetings from Krampus XOXO.
Nagel, who is German and Swiss, told the Murrieta Patch she saw the display as a way to educate her community on the origins of familiar Christmas traditions like Saint Nicholas and the Yuletide tree.
However, some residents fear the display could scare little children simply looking to enjoy a popular street for viewing Christmas lights.
I was appalled that the city of Murrieta would allow someone to enter a home with a theme representing the devil, one parent, who asked not to be identified, told the Patch. My 3-year-old was frightened by the home and I was disgusted. Im asking that you help make this disrespectful issue known to the residents of Murrieta.
A city Parks and Recreation official told the Patch that while the display is unconventional, the contest remains open to all residents.
Residents are being asked to vote on the 30 official entries for this seasons contest by Dec. 18.
The po widdle chilruns! I bet they have no problem with Halloween costumes.
If the Swiss / German woman erected the display in her own private property, those opposed can feel free to pound sand.
How did they get moochelle to pose?
The last episode of “Grimm” featured the Krampus character.
Can I wish you a Gay Kwanza?
I read that and for some reason I thought immediately of Obama. Don’t know why.
Well, possibly she has the right to put whatever she likes up on her house—although there usually are community regulations about that.
But I’m not sure if she has a right to enter a Christmas contest, in the name of “educating” her neighbors about the real meaning of Christmas.
That ain’t the real meaning of Christmas.
I’m getting that shirt.
That is so cool!
Now that is some art work, especially the kids in the basket with that oh sh*t look.
I wish I could be as talented at art as whoever did that. I can hardly write my name.
I’m surprised the SyFy network hasn’t come out with a Krampus movie yet.
Hey, I just saw that on Grimm. I thought they were making it up.
Krampusnado!
Krampus is real! :)
