Well, from watching the video, the pen does not look inhumane or too confining - a large dog run.
What about the other 11 dogs? Pretty simple for the son to notice which dogs had blood on their muzzle - so the other 11 non pit bulls live another day.
Newscasts usually note poor conditions or dog-fight type suspicions but not in this case - instead the news says police are wondering if she was operating a shelter or if these were her pets. Either a shelter or 12 pets is probably not legal at her residence (shelter without a permit?) so I can understand why animal control would collect the dogs. Also, because her son won’t be in much shape to be adopting dogs out right now.
I don’t see anything “not quite right” about this story. Pits want to lead the pack and pits are bred to kill and their kill style is attack-without-warning. We’ve seen so many of these stories bout pits it’s no surprise anymore. According to stats, of the people pits kill, the majority adults in their prime (not just the weak, young, elderly etc.) Puppy wants a challenge, eh?

I found this story, http://blog.dogsbite.org/2013/07/beyond-the-interview-essay-of-a-fatal-pit-bull-mauling.html, very moving (father writes that believing the pit bulls are misunderstood myth is what cost his son’s life)

I had never seen the dogsbite.org site. Pretty hard to argue with the death stats they post. My children will not be near a pit bull.

A very long read, but worth the time.

Very sad story. Hindsight is always easy, but the set up should have been more closely looked at. The Babysitter had the two pit bulls and two Chinchillas who were caged nearby. Just maybe, the scent of the little rodents wafted over to the baby , and since the pits could not get into the chinchilla cage, they generalized, and attacked the child as though he was one of the Chinchillas. Too many animals roaming free should be a warning, especially if the pack includes Pit Bulls. The Cops should NOT EVER have allowed the dad to see his baby son in that condition. No, I wont describe it here.

If she was rescuing them, it’s very possible that they had previously been abused, and may have been raised to fight.
