download free LibreOffice 3.

BTW, buy an older version of Office, like 2007, if you want to go that route.

Do you have Word, or just the bastardized version that comes with a new comp?

Is this Microsoft Word you bought? It SHOULD have a built in spell-check. In fact, if you have MS Word, then all of your text-capable programs... like email... are supposed to use Word’s spell-checker.

Take it back! And get a full refund!

Tiger Direct on line, or Amazon.com can set you up with a good laptop running Windows 7 Professional for a hellofalotless that $1k!

Both spell check and a dictionary should have installed with Office - you may want to check into a reinstall and make sure those options aren’t unchecked. This is a retail distro of Office, I’m assuming...

Did you buy Microsoft Word? Every version of Word that I have used has spell check, dictionary, and a thesaurus. It spell checks as you type.

What was the OS of your old Laptop ?

Did you like that OS ?

You can use the “product key” found on the Microsoft sticker and download that OS.

Take it back and raise hell. If you laid out $1000, and THEN had to buy an external cd drive, you got screwed! You should be able to get one hell of a notebook for 1/2 that much!

Any recent version of Word should have a spell-check. I'm not even sure it's possible to turn it off.

Are you sure you're not talking about WordPad? That's a utility word processor "lite" application that comes with most Windows' installs. It doesn't have a spell-check.

I suppose you could always compose your documents right here on FreeRepublic. Then, use the spell-check, and copy and paste into your document!

MS Office is one of the biggest rip-offs available. Unfortunately, it’s the industry standard so Microsoft can say get bent. Download any of the free clones. I have used Open Office. Works well.

My old laptop died and I had to buy a new one. Unfortunately it had Windows 8. It had no word processor and I had to buy the Office Suite and an external CD drive. Total cost? Near $1000! Now the problem. Word has no spell check, no dictionary. Any one know how I can get them? The internet was no help.”

I cant be the only one that cant make head or tails of this.
Windows 8 had nothing to do with you not having a word processor. You could easily have gone and just used Google Docs (free) and had one right there with a spell-check. Open Office or Rough Draft are both also free.

Why you went and bought an external CD drive is completely lost on me. And following stupid advice like getting Windows 7 when you already have an OS is just milking you out of more money.
