A place to renew patriotism [A Texan Discovers New England]

Few things renew American patriotism better than a trip to New England.

My wife and I had the opportunity to do that recently when we visited our daughter, who is working on a film project there for a couple of months.

Although we had been to Boston before, we were reminded of the city’s realities even before reaching the bag claim area at the airport.

This is the place where the notion took flight that simple colonists could recover their birthright of freedom by tearing themselves away from the oppressive rule of the British king and launching an experiment in self-government.

Inspired by the audacity of the men who dumped tea into Boston Harbor, Patrick Henry summed up defiance to tyranny with his legendary speech to the Virginia Legislature that concluded, “…give me liberty or give me death.”

The Samuel Adams statue in front of Faneuil Hall (aka the Cradle of Liberty) commemorates the first public meeting there, where Henry seized upon the opportunity following the Boston Massacre to mobilize the city’s citizenry against the omnipresent British troops.

His efforts were greatly aided by the work of engraver Paul Revere, whose over-dramatized depiction of the massacre served to stimulate anti-British public opinion.

That was the April 2009 Tea Party rally on Boston Common.

I would gladly give New England and a few other nearby states back to the king.

As far as being the birthplace of US freedom, perhaps the first battles were fought there but don’t forget about a third of the population supported the king. The real war for independence, IMO, was won in the south and mid atlantic states from West Point south.

I don’t think that will generate much tourism. Maybe from San Francisco.

New England sucks.

Quite possibly one of the biggest understatements I have ever seen on FR.

So maybe it’s best to think of the tone of article as anachronistic; still he found and documented pockets of freedom. We even a few NE patriots here, lest we forget.

The economy is going to go “pop” very soon

I fear you are right. Difficult to tell what happens after that - more government or less government? If history is a recent indicator I expect martial law in lib strongholds and the rest of us will be told we need to pay even more to “help our fellow Americans.”

Look what Red England has given us in recent years...Ted Kennedy, Jim Jeffords, Barney Frank, John Kerry, Bernie Sanders, Howard Dean, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Lincoln Chafee, Jeanne Shaheen, Anne Kuster, Carol ‘Che’ Porter, Peter Welch, Mitt Romney, Elizabeth Warren and Angus King...that’s the short list.

It will be less government in the sense that the federal government will implode and the States and localities will step in to fill the void. It’s happening already. The United States will shed the coasts, but that’s actually okay with me.

Plenty of patriotism to be discovered in Texas. Try the Alamo. Stay home & save your money.

If your patriotism needs regeneration, check out these sites in Texas:

Having lived in Massachusetts for 3 years while stationed at Otis AFB, Cape Cod, and as an eager student of history, I went everywhere and sought out all the historical sites, famous and little known.

One thing I have concluded is that the Puritan spirit which founded the colony has never died. There is a greatness to that spirit but also a vile pettiness.

The spirit of greatness led to the independent streak that brought forth the Revolution and the ideal that brave men fight, even to the death, for their liberty; and an enlightenment again in the 1800's that led to abolition of slavery (despite my Southern-ness, a good thing), modern treatment of the mentally ill, and universal public schooling. You may argue these things, but they helped build America beyond what we had. I celebrate all these things.

The evil twin of Puritanism was the Massachusetts habit of grossly caring about other people and what they're up to. There is a tendency to be dissatisfied of others, especially if they're enyoing themselves in any potentially dangerous manner (to the Puritan observer), whether mental, physical or spiritual.

This spirit led to the banshiment od Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams in the earliest days of the colony up to and including the Salem witch trials. It abatted a bit but is always there. Whether imposing ridiculous safety rules like no right turn on red light(one of the last states to finally repeal this,)only allowing shotguns to hunt deer or banning "racey" books in Boston, the state is full of nannies screaming "You can't do that!" No fireworks, no gun shooting in the backyard, drag racing, no burning trash out back, no filling in swamps to make new land--all banned. Try to add a building extension or a plain old backyard shed without a permit. And fees for anything fun!

This nanny statism can be summed up by the following quote:

“Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.”
― H.L. Mencken

Any 4th of July fireworks show in the south would do a far better job.

I did a lot of FReepin in Boston in the early 2000s. There weren't many of us but five or six of us would show up to protest the commies and be joined by in some cases a couple of hundred or more.

There is no conservative leadership, as we know conservative, in Mass. If they show up we might see a political difference in Mass.

The patriots up there should do something about it.

What patriots? If ANY NFL team should be changing their name in the near future; it's the Patriots, not the Redskins.

I'd add this one:

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's 1,200-acre San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site consists of the San Jacinto Battleground, Monument and Battleship Texas. These sites are located within minutes of downtown Houston and a short distance from the beaches of Galveston Island. Millions of visitors come to this area each year to enjoy the mild coastal climate and cultural and sports activities. Visitors experience history first-hand through living history at the San Jacinto Battleground and Battleship Texas. In 1948, the Battleship Texas became the first battleship memorial museum in the United States. That same year, on the anniversary of Texas Independence, the Texas was presented to the State of Texas and commissioned as the flagship of the Texas Navy. In 1983, the Texas was placed under the stewardship of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and is permanently anchored on the Buffalo Bayou and the busy Houston Ship Channel.
