That's a good way to put it.
Once the cat comes out of the bag, there will be some major swinging of the pendulum the other way. By this I mean that all the bandwagon jumpers have a force of their own and will push this technology, hard. It happened with the Wright brothers -- 99% of public calling them frauds, then everyone saying they knew the Wrights had it all along.
The danger is that it's a form of scientism, essentially the religion of science -- by people who have no real idea of how science works. Bandwagon science worship, ugh.
