It’s unclear from the way this was written “while swinging her arm” that she punched the sissy Sargent at all... Sounds like an accident.
The confusion might also be because at that age other objects may have been swinging at arms length.
She probably pulled the old trick “I’m going to swing my arms and walk forward, and if you get hit, it’s your own fault!”
