LIVE: Senate about to implode? Reid about to use the nuclear option?
C-span 2

All the action today appears to be in the Senate. They just finished voting on a motion to proceed to confirm one of Obama's nominees to the DC Court of Appeals, and it failed to get the necessary 60 votes to proceed. This is the 3rd nominee that the GOP has blocked, and Reid had threatened to go nuclear, to change the rules by a simple MAJORITY vote. Before that could happen, McConnell moved that the Senate adjourn until 5PM..a privileged motion which must be voted on. The roll call is underway.

2nd caucus = quorum. Of course that might only be a majority of Senators.

Whatever happens I am sure the Republicans are too big of pussies to ever retaliate in the future.

The vote should be posted here within an hour or so of the vote being recorded.

Actually, I think it means that Reid now expects to lose the Senate next year, so he'll try and push through as many of Obama's nominees as he can.

I agree. Reid knows the end is near and he better load the courts with lifetime appointments while they can.

He is the president pro tempore. And on votes like this, where they want a significant chair ruling, they put the president pro tempore (or the vice-president/president of the senate) in the chair.

Harry can let his vulnerable minions that are up for reelection vote against this and burnish their ‘independent’, ‘moderate’ image for 2014.

He can get it passed and help his most vulnerable soldiers for their re-election- a ‘twofer’.

Dilatory is the law for Reps from now on.

That or he’s just trying to do as much damage as he can while he can...

Remember, the threshold used to be 67 votes, then during the supermajority that happened post watergate for the democrats they lowered it to 60.

History shows the lower the number is the more chaotic government becomes, having a higher number ensures that both parties work together no matter who is in the majority.

I don’t know. I can’t hear it. And the captions are too low on the screen. It’s zoomed and isn’t showing right. Gah.

Reid must either think that the ‘rats will never lose the majority in the Senate, or the Presidency,

or, more likely, he believes that when the Reps have control of the Senate and the Presidency,

the ‘rats can get them to change the rule back “out of fairness”.

Or, more likely, he knows that, regardless of whether the Dems change the rules now, the GOP is almost certain to do so the next time they control the Senate and Presidency. Relations between the parties are so bad at this point that a move like this is almost inevitable - it's just a question of which party will pull the trigger.

I don’t know what they are voting on now..

They're probably voting on their 2014 pay increases and 2013 Christmas bonus.
