Descartes had it slightly wrong with his "cogito ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am.") As I understand both quantum theory and consciousness, he should have said "opto ergo sum" ("I choose, therefore I am.")

Descartes had it slightly wrong with his "cogito ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am.") As I understand both quantum theory and consciousness, he should have said "opto ergo sum" ("I choose, therefore I am.") It's obvious that he wrote down the first thought that popped into his head. (really, really big grin)
I believe you are correct and he may very well have chosen the latter if he had the knowledge available to us. I wonder at times how we will be viewed in a historical context.
