For more than 50 years, American women have cast off constrictive undergarments, which feminists have long criticized as symbols of repression. But for one Seattle resident, embracing the corset in the 21st century has been a tool of empowerment -- not oppression. For the last four years, 33-year-old Sarah Chrisman has not only worn a corset on a daily basis, she has also unabashedly embraced the 19th century, deciding to live a wholly Victorian-era lifestyle.

Victorians were proper/prudish in public, but in private..sexual debauchery of all sorts was rampant..
” It pushed my intestines up and they crowded my lungs and I couldn’t breathe.”
...I would get so banned... :)
I wonder if ms. chrisman votes.
“Why, he’s mending that bicycle using his bare hands!”
My nic explains it all, Ditter is baby talk for sister. I am a 73 year old Texas woman. My brother who was 5 years younger than I, named me that when he first learned to talk. I am my Bubba’s Ditter. Is that good enough?
From the “Devil’s Dictionary” by Ambrose Bierce:
Adamant, n. A mineral frequently found beneath a corset. Soluble in solicitate of gold.
No doubt many were hypocrites, but others were quite sincere in their values. In my mind, it is better to have high standards and fail to live up to them, than to embrace debauchery as a virtue. The latter is far more socially corrosive.
I agree with you. On the other hand, that doesn’t require tortuous undergarments: just self-respect.
The point of the corset was to be sexually desirable, the same as with present-day “shapewear.” Where a lady’s virtue or even household utility fits in the calculation, it’s hard to tell.
The Victorian era was from 1841 to 1904.
Oh, I love Spanx! They’re not only for chubby folks. They’re just what’s needed for certain dresses, when you want to make sure no lines are showing, and everything is firm.
Yes, you would, LOL
Back in the day, we were made to wear panty girdles, no matter what the outside temperature. Underwear for formal dances included a Merry Widow corset. They were both miserable to wear. First thing I did after moving out on my own at age 20 was throw them out, although, to be honest, I hadn’t worn either since age 18 when I went away to college.
I am a small mesomorph who never weighed more than 125 when I was young and stay at about 130, now. My mother truly believed girdles, corsets, gloves and hose were essential clothing for all women at all times. It was a prevalent belief in the 1950s.
What a proper Victorian lass. :-))
