In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
mountebank \ˈmau̇n-ti-ˌbaŋk\ noun
1. a person who sells quack medicines from a platform
2. a boastful unscrupulous pretender : charlatan
Example sentences:
In the more open spaces, jugglers and mountebanks, usually accompanied by performing animals, went through all sorts of gambols and antics.
Lewis Spence
Swindlers and mountebanks throng hither, adroit thieves creep stealthily about, all Indian customs and fashions are represented, all castes jostle each other.
Karl Ritter Van Scherzer
Etymology:
Italian montimbanco, from montare to mount + in in, on +banco, banca bench. First Known Use: 1577. Mountebank, pronounced "MOUN-tih-bank," has an interesting origin, in the Italian phrase "monta in banco." It describes a "doctor" who would "mount a bench" in the marketplace. Standing a bit higher than the crowd enabled people to hear his sales pitch and see the potions and powders he claimed were medical cures that never failed claims as bogus as his credentials. A mountebank is a fast-talking crook pretending to be an expert.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
We don’t do that here, but it doesn’t get nearly as cold here-so a difference in weather is what we are talking about-our outside faucets stay on all winter around here-in fact, it is recommended that you give cold-tolerant plants some water in dry periods on warmer days in winter.
In local discussions, both FrBrian and SrB have stated it the same way. Jesus was criticized for speaking to sinners, so is PopeFrancis. So far they have seen nothing overly alarming. They perceive this as the leftist media projecting their liberalism onto the Pope. So far, I can relate to their interpretation. Both are very conservative or I wouldn’t bother to listen to them.
I’m glad your warmth is secured once again-it is not fun to be too cold or too hot-how soft we have become over the centuries...
Husky girl watches any stranger suspiciously with one eye on her food bowl, growling occasionally-she won’t eat until she has walked to the door and satisfied herself that everyone who doesn’t belong is gone...
Sounds like Husky Girl makes watching over you her top priority.
The kitchen is beginning to smell of garlic, comino and cilantro-I’m cooking frijoles to go with the chili I will be starting in awhile...
Oh, the poor babies. Our Buffy went into heat..........she was miserable. Now she is scratching both ears and I have an appointment at the vets to get her ears checked. The groomer was worried about an ear infection so I have been watching her.
They should have left them there with more nails and hammers
She is the typical stolid, devoted Husky-a trait of the breed that I love. She has never shown me anything but loyalty-at 15, these are her last years, and I want her to be very happy.
Are you going to have Buffy spayed?
Oh, yes. DH stalled when I wanted to make the appointment and nature got ahead of me. When I told him I made a call to check into it his response was that it is too radical a procedure...blah, blah. This is how he sounds when he talks about treating his cancer, which he still will not do. I won’t be consulting him any further. I intend to dicuss it while I am in there and make an appointment to get it done. Enough of DH’s projecting his own fears onto the dog.
LMAO Good idea.
Perfect! LOL
My head is so congested that I can’t smell anything. I go to the doc’s tomorrow for a sinus infection.(sigh)
We don’t have a valve to shut off outside water. It shuts off all water, inside and out, in case of a leak.
I cooked up a chicken, broccoli, and pasta dish last night. It is definitely chili weather.
That’s unheard of up north. We have to prepare for winter’s coming every year. The recent snow is almost gone...I looked out my back window to see a ribbon of green grass (where the sun melted it), a ribbon of white snow (shaded area) and then a ribbon of bright red leaves under a tree....beautiful....but cold.
Are you planning to breed her?
I saw that story earlier. It reminds me of the democrats defending ozerocare. A+ for you.
GMTA! ROR!
