In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
mountebank \ˈmau̇n-ti-ˌbaŋk\ noun
1. a person who sells quack medicines from a platform
2. a boastful unscrupulous pretender : charlatan
Example sentences:
In the more open spaces, jugglers and mountebanks, usually accompanied by performing animals, went through all sorts of gambols and antics.
Lewis Spence
Swindlers and mountebanks throng hither, adroit thieves creep stealthily about, all Indian customs and fashions are represented, all castes jostle each other.
Karl Ritter Van Scherzer
Etymology:
Italian montimbanco, from montare to mount + in in, on +banco, banca bench. First Known Use: 1577. Mountebank, pronounced "MOUN-tih-bank," has an interesting origin, in the Italian phrase "monta in banco." It describes a "doctor" who would "mount a bench" in the marketplace. Standing a bit higher than the crowd enabled people to hear his sales pitch and see the potions and powders he claimed were medical cures that never failed claims as bogus as his credentials. A mountebank is a fast-talking crook pretending to be an expert.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

The shootees had previously engaged in a drug-related robbery of the shooter.
You and c-y-c are on the same page today. A+ for you.
Bishop Smackdown delivers!
Unforch, I couldn’t find the song on youtube. It’s pretty funny. They use sound effects from Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns throughout the song.
A+ for you! The minions are being dragged to reality, kicking and screaming all the way.
We had the same problem when the clintonistas were in office. So many words for evil...
That’s it!
Note the drumbeat at the end of every line is actually a laugh.
one of my work friends left for Iceland last night. She’s single, no kids, and a friend wanted someone to go on a trip with her. $800 for airfare and hotel and two excursions, one to a glacier, and another to the hot springs. Of course, there are only 5 hours of daylight at this time of year, but it still sounded cool to me to be able to just up and do something like that.
Glacier? Haven’t they all melted?
Criticism that Chaput had publicly faulted Francis as voicing tolerant views toward homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and artificial contraception, all of which the Catholic Church has long opposed, is “not fair,” he said.
“I was not criticizing the Holy Father,” Chaput said of remarks in June to the National Catholic Reporter.
“What I brought up was that I’m aware there are people who are critical of the Holy Father” for perceived liberalism on some issues, “and that it’s important that he talk to them, too.
“That is the fact,” said the archbishop. “I’ve never been critical of the Holy Father and would never speak ill of him.”
A priest of the Capuchin branch of the Franciscan order, Chaput described as “a great freshness, a great blessing for the church,” Francis’ call for greater care for the poor and openness to those who feel excluded from the church for reasons such as sexual orientation or divorce and remarriage.
I didn’t read it the way you did.
He sounds more like what I said.
oh i don’t think he sounds like what you said at all, considering he is being named as a CRITIC of the new pope. what you quoted there is his CYA, so that he doesn’t come off as sounding insubordinate.
I read the mans words, not those of the headline writer.
Chaput described as "a great freshness, a great blessing for the church," Francis' call for greater care for the poor and openness to those who feel excluded from the church for reasons such as sexual orientation or divorce and remarriage.
Did I somehow read that wrong?
the message has been clear from the git go. Stop helping the media keep people out of the doors of The Church,
New unit set outside, guy is smoking around gas line, not smart and it’s still 50 degrees in here with dog barking. I hope this job is done soon. And that I get some heat in here.
one can applaud his fresh approach and still decry his liberal orientation. i think Chaput has said enough to indicate his unease with the liberal orientation, while welcoming the fresh and dewy openness to the poor and downtrodden.
yikes, what is he THINKING????
Now I have what looks like 2 teenagers working on my gas line. I’m going to stop checking on them because it is not giving me confidence. The other one who asked for a bottle of water because he was under the weather is the smoker. He said he needed to stay hydrated. I thought that was only part of the problem but buttoned my lip.
Bless his heart though, I do love Southern manners. Ma’am, could I trouble you for some water? Not only did I rinse his gatorade jug, but gave him the filtered stuff. His mom raised him right.
