Can’t we just be friends with them?

I’m pretty sure that Barry and his ‘RATS are planning on Mexico being #51.

Let me be the first to point out this fact: The Philippines are no longer a territory of the USA and haven’t been for a long time now, they are an independent and sovereign country and cannot be granted statehood in the USA. Puerto Rico on the other hand is a territory of the USA and therefore can be made a state if they wish for statehood, they don’t want it and have made that clear many times.

No. If they become a state, its just one less place to go to get away.

Er, I don’t think so. Besides, I do not really want to move back to central Europe right now.

As someone born in the PI, but American to the core, nothing would make me prouder. Filipinos are great American citizens. I just wish we could turn back the hands of time when this could have been possible.
Thank-you so much considering the possibilities. Filipinos have always greatly admired the USA. They fought bravely in WWII. May of my father’s friends and their sons have continued the tradition of serving in our military. It would be a natural pairing.

Puerto Rico doesn’t pay taxes or otherwise have any obligation to the US but still get all the welfare, benefits, etc. Is that true?

This is probably hands down the dumbest idea I have ever read with my eyes. The only person who would benefit is the guy who makes the EBT cards. If this ever came to pass, I would curse the name of Admiral Dewey to the end of time. I would wail why did you just keep your fleet anchored in Hong Kong. I would rather give it back to Spain.

This idea is simply..... insane.

There is no reason to consider adding any states, never mind a country with vast and poor population, on the far side of the Pacific Ocean.

The proposal is incoherent. Separate (1) disaster relief from (2) US long-term interests and goals, and (3) Filipino long-term interests and goals.

Take care of disaster relief as appropriate.

Do not confuse that with thinking that either (2) or (3) would have anything to do with making the Phillipines part of the USA. Even if the Filipinos wanted this (don’t forget they kicked us out of our bases there not so long ago, so they don’t want us) it would mainly be for what they could “get” from us — we do not need any more freeloaders and socialists and voters for the Demagogues!!

Talk about this.

Don’t dismiss it out of hand.

America is currently fading fast. I believe we will rebound and reverse course before long, and adding an ally like the PI would to me, be smart. I believe the Philippines is a possibly strong ally and personally would support this idea.

Hey, what’s 35 million people added to the welfare roles. That’s just counting those below the poverty line using the metrics of the Phillipines. It could be 50-60 million. Just wonderful. Any other poverty stricken countries we can add to the American taxpayers bill.

The only problem with this is that southern Phillipines, island of Mindanao, is largely Muslim....and the Fillipinos have had problems with the Islamic Terrorists in the region. It would be devastating to bring in a state with a large Muslim population

Not a bad idea if you keep the Muslims out

The Filipinos I’ve met are all very nice people, but I don’t think that is enough reason to admit them into the union. I can say hte same about all the Canadians I’ve met, and certainly their western provinces are closer to conservative thinking than just about any other group of people I’ve met outside the US.

Following ancient Rome’s example I see. Make everyone a citizen of America! That’ll show those dems.
