NEW HAVEN, Conn., A Connecticut rabbi who purchased a desk for less than $200 on Craigslist said he found $98,000 in cash hidden inside.
Rabbi Noah Muroff of New Haven said he and his wife brought the desk home and discovered it would not fit through the door of their office without being disassembled, WTNH-TV, New Haven, reported Monday.
"Behind the drawers there is this plastic bag, like a shopping," Muroff said. "In the bag, I could already see through the bag, it looks like a one hundred dollar bill.
"We open it up and it's full of cash. And we counted up and there's $98,000 cash sitting in the bag," he said.
Muroff said he and his wife called the desk's former owner, who said she had hidden her inheritance in the desk long ago and forgotten the hiding place.
The rabbi said he and his wife were happy to return the cash to the grateful woman. He said the most important thing in life is to be honest.
I took my son's cell phone away when he didn't turn in some homework and then forgot where I put it. He's getting irritated.
As someone who has cleaned out several homes of elderly relatives, this is not far off the mark. You have to look through EVERY nook, cranny, and book.
It can be a frustrating adventure.
It’s a very nice desk and he’s a VERY honest guy. I don’t think I would have done that.
If ya dig deep enough these two are probably connected and this was just a publicity stunt to write a book, sell religion, or get famous, face in the papers, go on Jay Leno....
“Excuse me, I just found $98K in the desk I bought from you. Do you know anything about it?”
“So that’s where I put my inheritence. I just couldn’t remember. Yeah, that’s the ticket.”
They actually found $198,000, so it all sort of evens out.
I was trapped at a thrift store with an old GF once and got so bored I started checking the pockets on the suit racks.
Didn’t find any money but did find a couple of year’s old funeral bulletins and some receipts.
Fortunately, that amount wouldn’t be taxable - unless that state has an inheritance tax.
When he's not around, call it and listen for the ring.
It’s been a month since I hid it. I’m quite certain the battery is dead.
