Jump ahead to the 18:00 minute point to see and hear Michael McDonald comment on his part in supplying vocals. Very interesting stuff.

I go back and forth between “Aja” and “The Royal Scam” being my favorite Dan album.
I love “Gaucho” too.

The Royal Scam and Pretzel Logic are my favorites....I like Aja, but I tend to prefer the harder-edged early Steely Dan sound before they got too Jazzy.

I just watched a video of
Kid Charlemagne from Royal Scam (live) and remembered that it was also one of my faves.
Check it out.

I hadn’t heard of them, really, until a classmate at Fort Huachuca in 1978 turned me on to them. Great music.

Great music. Fun seeing kind of the exploded view of what’s going on with the individual parts in those songs.

Have the LP
The 1st Mrs. Lurkin floated the idea of naming a child Aja — but we never got to that.

LOVE this album, and the drumming on the title track, though simple, is sublime. Steve Gadd won the best drumming performance of the year for that. It’s become my favorite track on the album.

DEACON BLUES has got to be one of the best songs...EVER!!! I like it too, but I hope this doesn't ruin it for you...
Fagan: "Walter (Becker) and I had been working on that song at a house in Malibu. I played him that line, and he said, 'You mean it's like, they call these cracker assholes this grandiose name like the Crimson Tide, and I'm this loser, so they call me this other grandiose name, Deacon Blues?' And I said, 'Yeah!' He said, 'Cool! Let's finish it!'"

Steely Dan leads the nation in urban legends related to songs. Wake Forest students said that SD was referring to Wake Forest in that song.
To people in NOVA, SD is referring to Annandale HS in Arlington.
