Yes the plane crash had to do with Enigma and a would be assassination attempt on Churchill. Supposedly the British knew the plane would be targeted from breaking Enigma but they feared if the flight was canceled or diverted (Was a route often taken during that time) the Germans would suspect or realize their machine was compromised..
I believe the details of Enigma were kept top secret on the advice of British Intelligence for 30 years after WWII by some law, not sure though but a WWII buff might know around here what details were kept quiet.

One of the best tourist destinations in DC is the NSA cryptology museum. You can use an actual Enigma machine to encode and decode messages. For a kid who taught himself to use a Viginère tableau at the age of 8 or 9, it was like a dream for me.
