Former University of South Carolina running back Kenny Miles has been injured in a shooting near Irmo, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators say Miles was taken by EMS to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

South Carolina team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy said Miles was shot in the forearm and sustained a soft tissue injury. The ex-running back is expected to be released on Tuesday. Guy is currently treating Miles in this case.

Initially, reports from the Richland County Sheriff's Department indicated Miles had life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. in a business park near the intersection of Kinley Road and Centrum Drive, deputies said.

"Just after 1 o'clock, there was a robbery that took place," said sheriff's department spokesperson Sgt. Curtis Wilson. "We understand that the individual then shot Kenny in the upper body."

Wilson said the suspect tried to steal a team ring Miles was wearing during the incident.

Wilson said Miles was able to give authorities information about the incident while on the way to the hospital.

A maroon Ford Taurus was taped off with crime scene tape near 121 Centrum Drive.

Deputies are searching for the person or persons responsible, but have not released many details about the shooter.

"We are piecing this together to try to determine exactly who is responsible," said Wilson.

Additional details about the shooting or Miles' condition were not immediately available.

The Lawrenceville, Ga. native played in all 13 Gamecock football games in 2012. The tailback was third on the team with 359 rushing yards on 104 carries.

As a redshirt freshman in 2009, Miles led the team in rushing with 117 carries for 626 yards.

For his career, he rushed for 1,341 yards on 315 carries, including four 100-yard rushing games. Two of his five touchdowns came in the 2011 Capital One Bowl win over Nebraska.

He graduated in May with a degree in criminal justice.

In March, Miles took part in Washington Redskins rookie camp, but is not currently listed on the team's roster.

Wow. Football gets more and more violent every year.

I’m assuming that’s considered a personal foul.

Thing is, he’s an ex player.

Story didn’t smell right from the beginning, him not wanting 911 called after he’d been shot.
Here’s about what I’ve been hearing;
