Americans would much prefer to have daylight hours to extend daylight later in the day which will permit more family oriented after-work activities to be enjoyed: daylight for playing outside with the kids, gardening, biking, running etc. I'm just about ready to plant my winter tomatoes. < /sarc>
Between now and March the question on EDT vs. EST is whether I drive home in twilight or in the dark and whether I drive into work in twilight or just after sunrise. Either way I'm not getting anything useful done on either end of the day.
On the other hand I love DST in the summer with sunset after 9 pm.

Hmmm... Karl in Ohio.
You are near the western edge of eastern time. The first time Mrs. Peet and I travelled from the eastern edge of eastern time to he western edge of eastern time (MI in our case) we had to adjust to the almost-one-hour difference. The first night of our visit we didn't realize the time and imposed on our hosts. We started going by our watches instead of the sun and the problem was solved.
Point is, it really did make a difference.
