HARMANS, Md. (WJZ) It started with an online advertisement and a man looking to buy a car. But the purchase took a tragic turn.
Linh Bui reports Anne Arundel County Police now investigate a homicide.
Police continue searching for the shooter who they say used Craigslist to find his victim.
Halloween night, a Craigslist deal turned deadly. Just before 8 p.m., Anne Arundel County Police responded to a shooting in the 7400 block of Railroad Avenue in Harmans. Police found 44-year-old Rene Leiva-Archila of Baltimore badly wounded.
He was taken to the hospital and pronounced deceased, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body, said Lt. T.J. Smith, Anne Arundel County Police.
According to police, this was not a random shooting. They say the victim saw an ad on Craigslist for a vehicle and came to a parking lot to meet the seller.

If you think just because you’re on Home Depots wifi that you suddenly don’t have a IP then you’re very wrong.
well.. Kind of..
The WIFI card has a MAC address, basically a unique SN. But the card can be removed and disposed up.
Mmmm. I’ve been looking for a truck on Craig’s List. Thanks for the post.
My husband bought a truck off of Craig’s List this past summer. The transaction went very well. We met the lady in a Walmart parking lot. She brought her Dad and I was with my husband. Turns out we knew her ex-husband. lol Small world around here.
Also bought a nice BMW convertible on craigslist a few years ago.
I’ve bought a few cars on CL over the years.
Some iPhone thieves have tried to use CL lately to scam people, but I’ve always had good experiences. Mostly buying and I had a former co-worker that use to spend all day browsing the “Free Stuff” section and has scored some good items, but it’s first come, first serve.
I’ve even found a job on CL
Another sweet thing about libraries and other places (coffee shops) that provide connected computers for customers - anonymity. Can be used for both good and bad.
“When I sell or buy something on Craigslist, (like getting rid of old stuff) I just meet them at a very public place like a convenience store.”
When substantial cash is involved, my wife and I run backup. I park ahead of time in the parking lot. She parks near. She carries. I watch ready to intervene. Never had a problem.
She politely tells them on the phone that she carries a gun and she wants to let them know in advance so they don’t get upset. We have had a guy never show up—probably because the pickin’s seemed easier elsewhere.
The MAC can easily be changed or spoofed as well.
Agree, I’ve bought and sold a dozen cars and many auto parts on there. There are some screaming deals, infrequent but worth the effort to seek out if you have the time to spend.
Never had this problem with newspaper classified ads. Or if it did happen, the papers chose not to write about it.
