This is the greatest muscle car you’ve never heard of

You probably have fond memories of doing parking lot donuts with a Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda, watching Steve McQueen tear through the streets of San Francisco in a Mustang Fastback or pouring your blood, sweat and tears into restoring a ’68 Camaro inside and out. Whatever it may be, muscle cars were — and still are — a huge part of being a gearhead.

In 1972, I bought a 1967 Jag XKE 2+2 coupe. On those few occasions when it didn’t need something repaired, it was a dream. Few cars could match it, except maybe for the first few feet off the line. I also kept me broke, and wasn’t the chick magnet I expected it to be, but then, neither was I.

On my (long) list of stupid things I have ever done was selling my '68 Firebird. I want it back.

yeah...right...a mustang with a 71 Road Runner front end and a 69 charger rear end....why not just buy a REAL Mopar muscle car instead of dressing up a pig of a Ford.

Nailed it!

I had a red ,68 Tempest in high school. 350 V8, Holly 4-barrel, Hooker headers, Keystone Klassic rims, side-pipes. Those were the days. $;-)

Half of what retro-muscle car fans like is fewer layers between you and the car... Putting all of those toys in a muscle car kinda undermines some of the charm. Nothing against toys, but I'd rather have them in a full size luxury automobile, not a muscle car or even a pedestrian old driveabout like my Dart.

Absolutely correct. I don't mind the usual powertrain / brakes / suspension "restomod" upgrades which eliminate some of these older cars' shortcomings, but this goes too far.

A few years ago, Burt Reynolds worked with the DIY Network and Year One Restorations to build an upgraded "Bandit" '77 Trans-Am. They did a really good job with that project, enhancing the car in the right spots without taking anything away from its nature or numbing it with electronic gadgetry.

I wish I had been able to keep the Jag. It would be worth a fortune now.

A quarter of a million dollars for a revamped old Mustang? No wonder I’ve never heard of it.

You'd probably have to use quotation marks when referring to Ford's contribution to this vehicle. My hunch is that it's built on a Dynacorn repop unibody made in China.

My favorite car of the era was the Chevelle Malibu SS 396. I never had one, nor could I afford it, but I spent a lot of time in French class daydreaming about it.

At the time, I was more interested in the French teacher. If you could see her as she was then, you would understand.

Naah, it's been done - and then some.

There's no replacement for displacement - and six feet of timing chain.
