Secession will be a a natural by product of a total economic collapse. Some states will just simply refuse to go over the fiscal cliff and leave the union. They seceding states will reform as a new country or just be independent sovereigns. Either way they will be done with the imperfect disunion.

From their study of history, your natives James Madison and Patrick Henry were experts on the theory and practices of republics.

Both cited Montesquieu when it came to how a nation that expected to span a continent could be ruled other than by coercion from a small, centralized, consolidated government.

The answer was to create a federated republic, IOW a republic composed of republics.

Henry assumed consolidated tyranny in the near term. Madison denied that could happen as long as there was a senate of the states.

Here in SE Ohio, deep in Applachia, the left and the right both don’t like the big fed government. Pretty much no one here wants any government meddling in their lives. Marijuana cash money pays for the healthcare down here, Obamacare is going to upset everyone. Maybe that will start a seccession movement here.

I've written this same message a number of times, but here I go again:

The dumbest element of the American population votes for Democrats. That's all the minorities, the mush-skulled yutes, and the hysterical single females who think abortion is the only issue all vote for Obama. Certainly all the dead weight Americans who are a huge financial drag on the country by either not working or who simply show up for work without working much all vote for Obama. Doesn't solve the basic problem of two distinct types of people(socialist vs. individualists) sharing a common land/govt. There needs to be a physical divide for each to "flourish" in.
